Chapter 6 - Darkness in the East Wing

The sudden plunge into darkness paralyzed the room for a fraction of a second. The wind from the shattered balcony howled louder now, whipping the sheer curtains into a frenzy of white motion. Clara gasped, instinctively grabbing Dr. Harris’s sleeve in the pitch black.

"Stay calm," Julian commanded, his voice cutting through the rising wind. He reached into his suit jacket and flicked on the heavy-duty tactical flashlight he always carried since the threats began.

The bright LED beam cut a stark white path across the room, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the cold air. Julian swept the light toward the heavy oak door, which was now firmly latched from the outside. The metal mechanism had clicked into place with a mechanical finality that could only mean one thing: they were locked inside.

"Someone just bolted us in," Dr. Harris stated, stepping toward the door and testing the brass handle. It remained rigid, unyielding.

"Marcus," Clara whispered, her voice trembling in the dark. "He knew the master key codes. He must have reprogrammed the smart locks from the security terminal downstairs."

Julian didn't panic. His mind raced through the blueprints of the mansion. Every room in this ancestral home was built with historical eccentricities—secret passages, escape routes designed for nineteenth-century aristocrats fleeing political purges. His grandfather had practically lived in the paranoia of betrayal, leaving behind a legacy of hidden mechanisms.

"Help me with this wardrobe," Julian instructed, pointing the flashlight toward a massive mahogany armoire that sat against the eastern wall, right where the ancestral floor plans indicated a secondary egress.

Dr. Harris didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy wooden side while Julian took the other, and together they heaved with all their strength. The antique furniture scraped loudly against the hardwood floor, revealing a narrow, dust-covered wooden panel set deep into the wainscoting.

"There," Julian breathed, shining the light directly onto a small iron lever shaped like a roaring lion's head.

He pulled the lever downward with a sharp clack. The wall panel groaned, slowly swinging inward to reveal a pitch-black, narrow stone stairwell leading down into the bowels of the mansion.

"Where does that lead?" Clara asked, shrinking back from the dark opening.

"Straight to the old wine cellar," Julian said, stepping into the threshold. "And right behind the servants' quarters where Marcus keeps his personal logbooks."

Before Julian could take his first step down the stone stairs, a distinct, heavy footstep echoed from the other side of the closed bedroom door, followed by a chilling, low laugh.
