Chapter 5 - The Midnight Visitor

The sudden, piercing chime of the front doorbell reverberated through the quiet house, making Mark jump to his feet. He stared down the staircase toward the dark foyer, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

"Who could possibly be here at this hour?" Mark muttered, wiping his sweaty palms against his grey pants. He glanced back at the linen closet.

The door was still open, but the space inside was completely empty. The thick blue blanket lay crumpled on the floorboards, and the cracked family photo was gone, leaving behind only a fine dusting of dry dirt. The hallway Lily was also gone, leaving Elena kneeling alone on the bare carpet, staring numbly at her empty hands.

"Elena, where did they go?" Mark asked, stepping over to his wife and offering her a hand.

Elena ignored his hand and stood up on her own, her legs shaking slightly. "They didn't go anywhere, Mark. They’re waiting for us to answer that door."

The doorbell rang a second time, longer and more insistent.

Mark swallowed hard, his instincts screaming at him not to move, but the heavy silence of the hallway left him no choice. He walked slowly down the stairs, his hand sliding along the wooden banister for support. The house felt heavier, the air colder, as if the temperature had dropped twenty degrees in a matter of seconds.

He reached the bottom of the stairs and stepped into the dim foyer. Through the frosted glass of the front door, the silhouette of a tall figure stood motionless on the porch, cast in the harsh amber glow of the streetlamp outside.

Mark reached out, his fingers wrapping around the cold brass handle of the front door. He pulled it open, expecting police officers, neighbors, or perhaps nothing at all.

Standing on the welcome mat was a middle-aged woman wearing a worn beige trench coat, holding a heavy cardboard box tied with twine. Her face was weathered, her eyes hollow and filled with a haunting familiarity.

"You left this at the station three years ago," the woman said quietly, stepping past Mark into the house without waiting for an invitation. "It’s time you signed the final paperwork."
