Chapter 1 - The Broken Routine

The heavy porcelain plate skidded across the beige carpet of the brightly lit hallway, carrying a half-eaten sandwich and a small wedge of cheese. Seven-year-old Lily knelt in her pristine white dress, her neatly braided hair swaying as she carefully pushed the dish underneath the heavy wooden door of the linen closet.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Mark’s voice cracked through the corridor like a whip, sharp and vibrating with sudden rage.
Mark strode forward, his dark blue t-shirt clinging to his broad shoulders, his face twisted into an intense mask of suspicion. He towered over his daughter, his dark eyes narrowing as he stared down at the dark gap beneath the closet door.
Lily flinched, her small hands pulling back quickly. She looked up at him with wide, trembling eyes, her chest rising and falling in shallow, frightened breaths.
"Daddy, wait, please," Lily whispered softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the hallway light.
"Who is that for, Lily?" Mark demanded, his voice rising, stepping closer and blocking her escape path. "Who are you feeding?"
Before Lily could answer, the sound of fast, heavy footsteps echoed up the stairs. Elena rushed into the hallway, her beige blouse slightly rumpled, her face pale and drained of all color. She looked back and forth between her angry husband and her terrified daughter, her eyes wide with undisguised terror.
"What’s happening?" Elena cried out, her voice shaking violently as she grabbed Mark’s arm to pull him back.
Mark shook her off roughly, his gaze locked onto the mysterious door. "She’s hiding someone in there, Elena. Open your eyes. She’s been doing this for days."
Elena swallowed hard, her gaze darting to the closet door and back to Lily. "Please, just listen to me first," she begged, her voice breaking on the edge of a sob.
Mark ignored her plea. He dropped to his knees on the carpet, his fingers wrapping around the cold metal grip of a heavy black flashlight. He clicked the power switch with a sharp snap, his thumb trembling slightly against the ribbed casing.

"No, Mark, don't!" Elena screamed, lunging forward just as Mark reached out and twisted the brass doorknob.
