Chapter 12 - The Final Meal

Mark stopped at the edge of the closet threshold, his boots resting on the exact spot where he had stood hours ago. The bitter wind blowing in from the open front door downstairs didn't reach this room; the air here smelled of vanilla and peppermint, warm and entirely detached from the cold reality waiting outside.
"You're still here," Mark whispered, his voice cracking as he slid slowly down the doorframe until he was sitting on the carpet, mirroring the exact position he had taken when this nightmare began.
Lily didn't speak. She shifted slightly on the edge of the small white bed, her hands steady as she held the porcelain plate out toward him, offering it the way a child offers a gift to an exhausted parent.
Elena appeared in the hallway behind him, her footsteps completely silent. She didn't try to stop him, and she didn't run away. She walked past Mark and stepped across the threshold into the room, kneeling down on the pink carpet right beside her daughter.
"We're so sorry, Lily," Elena whispered, her voice breaking as she reached out to gently touch the edge of the child's white dress. Her fingers didn't pass through the fabric; for the first time, the cloth felt warm and real beneath her fingertips.
Lily looked at her mother, her dark eyes softening, losing the terrifying, hollow resonance they had carried earlier in the night. "You don't have to be scared anymore, Mommy. The door is open now."
Mark watched them, the tears finally cutting clean paths through the dried mud and sweat on his face. He reached out his hand, his fingers trembling, and placed them on the other side of the porcelain plate, sharing the weight of the dish with his daughter.
"I'm ready to remember everything, sweetheart," Mark said, his voice steadying as he looked directly into his daughter’s eyes. "Every single second."

The moment the words left his mouth, the walls of the small bedroom began to dissolve, the pink wallpaper peeling away like dry autumn leaves to reveal the dark, charred wooden studs of a house that had burned down three years ago to cover up the tragedy.
