Chapter 4 - The Echoes of the Past

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the house like a gunshot, making both Mark and Elena flinch violently. The hallway Lily pressed her face deeper into her mother’s shoulder, whimpering softly as the sharp scent of damp earth and decaying autumn leaves suddenly filled the clean indoor air.

"Elena, what are we looking at?" Mark demanded, his voice tight with rising panic as he looked down at his hands, noticing they were trembling uncontrollably. "If that’s... if she’s been in there, then who is..."

He couldn't finish the sentence. He looked down at the little girl holding onto Elena. The white dress she wore was spotless, perfectly ironed, and devoid of any dirt or wear. But as Mark watched, the pristine fabric began to fray at the hem, turning dull and gray before his very eyes.

"She only appears when the memories get too heavy to carry alone," Elena explained, her voice cracking as she stroked the fading hair of the girl in her arms. "She is the ghost of what we lost, Mark. And the other one... the other one is what we left behind in the cold."

Mark stepped toward the closet again, ignoring the raw terror tearing at his stomach. He knelt carefully, keeping his eyes locked on the child beneath the blue blanket. The girl’s skin was unnaturally pale, almost translucent under the dim light of the corridor.

"Why didn't you come to us?" Mark asked gently, his voice breaking as he reached out a trembling hand toward the edge of the blanket. "Why hide in the dark?"

The girl shrank back, pulling the frayed blue blanket tighter around her small frame. "Because you stopped setting a plate for me at the dinner table," she replied, her voice echoing with a heartbreaking sorrow that made Mark’s chest ache physically.

Elena gasped, a suppressed sob escaping her lips as she heard the words. She shifted her weight on the carpet, trying to move closer to the closet. "We didn't mean to, sweetheart. We just wanted the pain to stop."

"Pain doesn't stop," the closet girl whispered, her dark eyes staring straight through Mark’s soul. "It just waits in the closet for someone to open the door."

As she finished speaking, the front doorbell downstairs rang loudly, shattering the tense silence of the house.
