Chapter 3 - The Cold Verification

The hallway light hummed overhead, casting a harsh, sterile glow over the terrifying tableau. Mark scrambled backward on the carpet, his grey pants scraping against the fibers as he tried to distance himself from the open closet door. His chest heaved with unnatural breaths, his mind desperately rejecting the impossible reality unfolding before his eyes.

"This is a sick trick," Mark whispered, his voice cracking as he pointed a trembling finger at the child beneath the blue blanket. "An illusion. A reflection. Something."

The girl in the white dress standing in the hallway began to cry silently, her small shoulders shaking as she buried her face in her mother’s beige blouse. Elena held her tightly, rocking back and forth while casting desperate, warning glances at her husband.

Inside the dark recess of the closet, the other Lily slowly lowered the old framed family photo. The glass was cracked down the center, dividing the smiling faces of Mark, Elena, and Lily from a sunny afternoon three years ago.

"You forgot my birthday, Daddy," the closet girl said softly, her voice carrying a chilling, flat resonance that did not belong to a seven-year-old child.

Mark scrambled to his feet, backing away until his spine hit the opposite wall. "No. No, my daughter is right here. My daughter is in this room."

"Mark, look at her shoes," Elena said, her voice barely a whisper as she pointed a shaking finger toward the closet floor.

Mark forced his gaze downward. The girl in the hallway was wearing polished black Mary Jane shoes. The girl beneath the blue blanket was barefoot, her tiny ankles bruised and caked in dried mud that matched the exact stains found on the missing children's flyers plastered all over town three years ago.

"The park," Mark remembered, the memory stabbing through his brain like a shard of ice. "The search that was called off after forty-eight hours."

"We stopped looking, Mark," Elena confessed, tears streaming freely down her pale cheeks. "Because the police told us to lose hope. But she never stopped trying to come home."

Before Mark could process the horrifying truth, the framed family photo in the closet shattered completely in the child's hands, the glass bursting outward without anyone touching it.
