Chapter 9 - The Ghost Protocol

Arthur looked up sharply from the audit report, the expression on his face hardening instantly. "What kind of something larger? Specify, Clara."

Clara tapped her tablet screen, bringing up a heavily encrypted file schematic that had been salvaged from the sector logs. "According to the fragmented code sequences, Julian wasn't just trying to acquire our drilling permits to extract resources. He was installing a secondary backdoor routing protocol into the regional power distribution transformers across three neighboring states."

Arthur stood up from his chair, walking slowly toward the glass window as the gravity of her words sank in. "A backdoor routing protocol... He wasn't just planning a corporate merger. He was building a kill switch for the entire regional power grid."

"Exactly," Clara confirmed, stepping closer. "If Horizon controlled the primary transmission nodes through our acquired easements, and simultaneously held the kill switch via the hacked substations, they could induce localized blackouts at will. They could artificially crash regional energy supplies, drive up spot-market prices by four hundred percent, and then buy back competing utilities for pennies on the dollar."

"Economic terrorism disguised as corporate restructuring," Arthur muttered, his fists clenching tightly at his sides. "And Marcus helped them translate the regulatory compliance documents so the automated safety sensors would ignore the frequency anomalies."

"The federal investigators haven't connected those dots yet," Clara said, lowering her voice further. "Their focus is strictly on corporate espionage and wire fraud. If we hand them this schematic without context, Horizon’s legal team will claim it’s standard grid optimization software and walk away with a minor fine."

"We can't rely on the federal investigators alone," Arthur said decisively. "They move too slowly through bureaucratic channels. If Horizon realizes their kill switch schematic was salvaged, they'll trigger the sequence preemptively before the regulatory audits even reach the secondary substations."

"What do you propose we do, sir?" Clara asked, her expression a mix of awe and anxiety at the sheer boldness of his posture. "We’re already under federal scrutiny, our stock is crashing, and our internal security has been completely compromised."

"We go dark," Arthur stated, turning back to face her with absolute resolve. "We take the system offline manually, starting with the primary substation at Site Zero. If we cut the physical circuit from our end, their remote backdoor loses its power source."

Before Clara could reply, the heavy oak doors of the conference room burst open without warning. Sarah Lin rushed inside, her face completely drained of color, holding her smartphone out toward them with trembling hands.

"Arthur! You need to see this right now!" Sarah gasped, tapping the screen to play a live news broadcast. "The secondary transmission grid in the eastern sector just suffered a catastrophic, simultaneous shutdown. Half the city is already in total darkness!"
