Chapter 13 - The Grounded Circuit

Before Victor Thorne could squeeze the trigger, a blinding flash of white light erupted from the rafters overhead, accompanied by a deafening roar of electrical discharge. The entire warehouse plunged into instantaneous, absolute darkness as the massive overhead work lights exploded in a shower of white-hot sparks.
"What is happening?!" Thorne shouted in panic, blindly firing his sidearm into the empty air as the sound of snapping metal echoed through the cavernous space.
"Clara," Arthur whispered to himself with a grim smile, realizing she had successfully triggered the manual grounding shunt at the Site Zero substation just in time.
In the pitch-black darkness, the sound of heavy boots hitting the concrete floor echoed from the loading docks. A tactical flashlight beam cut through the smoke and dust, followed by the sharp, authoritative commands of federal marshals flooding the terminal from all sides. "Federal Energy Regulatory Commission! Drop your weapons!"
Victor Thorne cursed loudly, attempting to bolt toward the rear exit, but a heavy tackle from a federal operative sent him crashing hard against a stack of wooden crates. His tactical tablet slipped from his wrist, clattering across the concrete floor right near Arthur’s feet.
Arthur picked up the ruggedized military device. The screen was still flickering, displaying a rapidly failing connection status as the regional grid protocols began dumping their data packets into the ground. He tapped the master reset sequence one final time, wiping the Horizon backdoor routing system completely off the server cluster.
Marcus hurried over, holding his daughter tightly against his side as the federal agents secured the area and slapped handcuffs onto Thorne. "Arthur... thank you. I don't deserve this. After everything I did..."
"You're right, Marcus. You didn't deserve it," Arthur said, looking down at his former translator with a steady, unyielding gaze. "But your daughter deserved a father who didn't have to live in fear. Now take her home. And tomorrow morning, you will testify in federal court and tell them every single detail of how Horizon planned this takeover."
"I will," Marcus nodded, his voice thick with emotion as he gently guided Emily toward the exit where the medical unit waited. "I'll tell them everything."
Clara emerged from the shadows near the loading dock, her hair slightly disheveled, her white shirt stained with grease, but her eyes bright with triumph. She walked up to Arthur, handing him his suit jacket, which she had rescued from the sedan.
"The substation shunt held, sir," Clara reported, breathing heavily. "The regional grid is stabilizing. The emergency automatic safety protocols have restored power to ninety percent of the city."

Arthur slipped his arms into the sleeves of his jacket, adjusting the lapels with quiet dignity as the morning light finally broke fully through the shattered glass skylights above. "Then it’s time to go back to the office, Clara. We have a company to save."
