Chapter 3 - The Ghost Resignation

The digital notification glowed against the dark screen of Clara’s phone, casting a pale blue light across her panicked expression. Arthur snatched his own device from his pocket, his thumb swiping frantically across the display. There it was, stamped with his official cryptographic digital signature: an irrevocable resignation from the CEO position of Vance Energy, citing sudden health decline and transferring all executive voting rights to an interim oversight committee chaired by Julian Cruz.
"This is a forgery," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stared at the screen. "My private keys are stored on a hardware token in my office safe. No one else has the master PIN."
Julian took another unhurried sip of his wine, leaning forward with his elbows resting on the table. "Keys can be duplicated, Arthur. Or better yet, when a man reaches your age, people simply assume he’s finally stepping down out of exhaustion. The board didn't even question the authenticity. They voted unanimously three minutes ago while you were still arguing over translation semantics."
Marcus stood up slowly, grabbing his coat from the back of his chair. He wouldn't look Arthur in the eye, keeping his gaze fixed on the floorboards. "I'm sorry, Arthur. I really am. But the future belongs to those who adapt."
"Sit down, Marcus," Arthur commanded, stepping forward to block the exit path toward the heavy oak doors. "You aren't leaving this room until the authorities verify the origin of this digital signature."
"What authorities, Mr. Vance?" Julian asked, his smile widening into something predatory. "The local precinct is currently executing a search warrant at your downtown headquarters based on an anonymous tip regarding corporate tax discrepancies. Your offices are being locked down as we speak."
Clara’s phone buzzed again. She didn't even want to look at it, but her thumb swiped automatically. "Sir... it's true. The financial crimes division just seized the accounts. All operational funds are frozen."
Arthur felt the ground beneath him shift. Forty years of building, protecting, and expanding an energy empire, dismantled in less than ten minutes through a combination of linguistic betrayal, forged credentials, and coordinated regulatory strikes. He looked at Julian, seeing not just a corporate rival, but a cold, calculated executioner wearing a clean blue tie and a designer suit.
"You planned this from the very beginning," Arthur said, his voice barely above a whisper. "The dinner invitation, the renegotiation of Sector Nine, the translation delay... it was all a distraction."
"Of course it was," Julian replied, standing up smoothly from the table and smoothing the front of his dark suit. "You were becoming an obstacle to the global energy grid consolidation. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have a press conference downstairs to announce the new leadership of Vance-Horizon global."
Julian signaled to Marcus, and together they stepped toward the exit, brushing past Arthur as if he were already a ghost. Clara moved to block them, but Arthur raised a hand, stopping her with a firm shake of his head.
"Let them go," Arthur said quietly, his eyes locked on the heavy oak door as it clicked shut behind the traitors.
"Sir, we just lost everything!" Clara cried out, her restrained composure finally cracking as a single tear escaped down her cheek. "We have no money, no offices, no legal standing, and your name is legally dead in the corporate world!"

Arthur turned to her, a strange, grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Not everything, Clara. They took the company, but they forgot to check the physical vault at the old refinery."
