Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the Dark

"Step away from the safe, Mr. Vance."
The voice echoed flatly off the concrete walls, cold and devoid of human warmth. A figure stepped out of the shadows near the entrance, dressed in tactical black gear, holding a suppressive-barreled carbine pointed steadily at Arthur’s chest. Behind him, a second figure emerged, dragging a heavy metallic case across the floor.
Clara gasped, instinctively stepping in front of Arthur, her hands raised defensively. "Who sent you? How did you find us here?"
"Horizon Security doesn't rely on digital traces alone, Miss Vance," a third voice echoed from the doorway as a familiar silhouette stepped into the dim light. Julian Cruz adjusted his blue tie, looking entirely out of place amidst the grime and rust of the abandoned refinery, yet carrying the effortless smugness of a victor holding all the cards. "Did you really think we would leave a high-value target like the founder of Vance Energy wandering around unsecured industrial zones without a tail?"
Arthur gently placed a hand on Clara’s shoulder, pulling her back behind him with deliberate calmness. He didn't look surprised; instead, his eyes narrowed as he studied Julian’s posture. "You're slipping, Julian. If you wanted the contents of this safe, you wouldn't have walked in here yourself. You brought us here because you couldn't open it."
Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression that did not escape Arthur’s trained eye. The younger man stepped closer, his polished leather shoes crunching on the dusty concrete. "Let's not play games, Arthur. The legacy trust contains the physical shareholder certificates that predate the digital restructuring of nineteen-ninety-five. Without those certificates, our acquisition of Vance Energy remains legally vulnerable to shareholder lawsuits. Hand over the mechanical combination, and we ensure you and your assistant receive a comfortable, quiet retirement in Zurich."
"And if we refuse?" Clara asked, her voice steady despite the tactical weapon pointed directly at them.
"Then this decommissioned refinery becomes your permanent, unmarked grave," Julian replied casually, gesturing to the armed operative. "Accidents happen during site inspections of unstable industrial ruins. The municipal records will simply list you both as trespassing victims of a structural collapse."
Arthur felt the heavy metal casing of the safe beneath his fingertips. The mechanical dial felt cold, solid, real. He knew that inside lay the original founding charter—a document containing signatures of the original municipal board that granted Vance Energy perpetual land easements across the entire tri-state area. If Julian got those certificates, Horizon would control not just the company, but the physical land rights beneath every major competitor's pipeline.
"Julian," Arthur said quietly, turning his body slightly to block the operative’s line of sight to the dial. "You think you've won because you bought Marcus, because you forged my signature, because you seized the servers. But you forgot one fundamental rule of energy markets."
"And what is that?" Julian asked, raising an eyebrow impatiently.
"Energy cannot be created or destroyed," Arthur whispered fiercely, spinning the dial three times to the left. "It only transforms. And right now... you just stepped into a closed circuit."

With a sharp click, the heavy steel door of the safe swung open, revealing not paper certificates, but a glowing red emergency activation toggle wired directly to the municipal grid.
