Chapter 6 - Darkness in the Vault

The sudden plunging into darkness was accompanied by a heavy, mechanical thud from somewhere deep within the bowels of the estate foundation. The emergency generator whined loudly, choked and sputtered, before dying out completely, leaving only the weak, wavering beam of Detective Vance’s tactical flashlight cutting through the dust-choked air of the vault.
"Stay back, both of you," Detective Vance commanded sharply, his left hand dropping instinctively to the grip of his service weapon while his right arm held the light steady.
Julian didn't move. He stood frozen in the center of the aisle, his breathing shallow and erratic. "It’s the master circuit," he whispered, panic tightening his throat. "Eleanor... Eleanor controls the secondary grid from the panic room. She’s cutting power to cover her tracks."
Rebecca’s heart hammered against her ribs. The romantic dream of the wedding day was a distant, grotesque memory, replaced by the suffocating reality of stone walls, hidden crimes, and a family legacy built on shadows. She reached out, her fingers brushing the cold metal of the filing cabinet to steady herself.
"She can't hide everything, Julian," Rebecca said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, steely register. "The digital copies of these files were uploaded to my cloud storage the moment I opened that drawer this morning. Even if she burns this house to the ground, the truth is already out."
Julian turned his head sharply toward her in the dim light, his eyes wide with sheer terror. "You don't know what Eleanor is capable of," he breathed, his voice cracking. "She isn't just an old woman in a beige cardigan. She built this empire during the syndicate wars of the nineties. People who cross her don't go to prison—they simply vanish, and nobody ever asks questions."
A sharp, metallic clanging echoed from the ventilation shaft above their heads, followed by the distinct sound of heavy iron bolts sliding into place from the outside.
Detective Vance swore under his breath, rushing toward the heavy vault door. He threw his weight against the steel slab, but it didn't budge an inch. The pneumatic locks had engaged autonomously, sealing them inside the pitch-black subterranean tomb.
"We've been locked in," Vance stated, his voice dangerously calm as he pulled a heavy-duty radio from his tactical vest. He tapped the transmit button repeatedly, but only harsh static hissed through the speaker. "The thick concrete and lead lining are blocking all radio frequencies. We're completely cut off."
Rebecca pulled out her own designer smartphone, watching in mounting horror as the battery icon flashed red and instantly died, the cold subterranean temperature killing the lithium cell in seconds.
"She planned this," Rebecca whispered, a cold sweat breaking out across her collarbone. "The wedding was never the main event. It was a distraction to get all the key players under one roof while she liquidated the offshore holdings."
Julian sank slowly to his knees on the concrete floor, his designer trousers stained with dark grime. He buried his face in his hands, soft, broken sobs finally breaking through his ruined composure. "She’s going to kill us," he wept softly. "She’s going to seal this tomb and leave us here to rot with the ghosts."
Detective Vance ignored the weeping man, sweeping his flashlight along the reinforced steel walls until the beam caught a narrow, rusted maintenance ladder disappearing into a vertical shaft in the far corner of the vault.
"There's an emergency drainage pipe," Vance said, checking the ammunition in his sidearm with a sharp click. "It leads up to the greenhouse. Move, now."

As they scrambled toward the rusted ladder, a low, mechanical grinding sound vibrated through the floorboards beneath their feet, followed by the unmistakable scent of burning plastic and acrid gray smoke pouring down from the ventilation grates.
