Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the West Wing

The heavy oak doors swung inward with a low, ominous groan, revealing the cavernous, flower-adorned chapel where three hundred guests sat in suffocating silence. A string quartet played a melancholic rendition of a traditional wedding march, the notes sounding less like a celebration and more like a dirge.

Julian straightened his bow tie with trembling fingers, desperately trying to reassemble the mask of effortless charm that had built his billion-dollar empire. He cast a venomous glance at Eleanor, who merely adjusted her beige shawl and motioned toward the side corridor leading deep into the private residential quarters of the estate—the notorious West Wing, an area staff and guests were strictly forbidden to enter.

"The nanny isn't coming, Julian," Rebecca said quietly, refusing to move an inch toward the aisle. Her veil trailed behind her like a shroud. "In fact, I sent a message to the local authorities ten minutes ago, right before I came down the stairs."

Julian froze mid-step, the color draining entirely from his handsome face, leaving him looking ghost-white under the warm amber lighting of the chandeliers. "You did what?" he choked out, the polished baritone fracturing completely.

"I called the sheriff," Rebecca replied steadily, stepping over the fallen paper without looking at it. "Because when I walked into your private study this morning to leave a wedding gift, I didn't just find Emily crying. I found the hidden ledger behind the family portrait—the one detailing the missing trust funds and the suspicious medical records of the child's real mother."

Eleanor’s cane hit the marble floor twice, a sharp, authoritative crack that silenced the approaching footsteps of the wedding coordinator who was rushing down the hall to check on the delay.

"You absolute fool," Eleanor hissed at Julian, her cane pointing like a spear toward Rebecca. "I told you she was too ambitious for her own good. Women of her class always think they can play detective."

Julian’s chest heaved rapidly under his custom tuxedo jacket. The veneer of corporate success and social invincibility peeled away, exposing a cornered, desperate man capable of anything. He looked around the empty hallway as if searching for a hidden exit, his eyes wild and bloodshot.

"You don't understand what will happen if the authorities search the West Wing," Julian pleaded, taking a desperate half-step toward Rebecca, his hands raised in a gesture of frantic supplication. "The scandal will destroy everything. The company, the legacy, my entire life's work—it will all vanish overnight."

Rebecca stared at him with unblinking, chilling empathy. "Your life’s work was built on stolen inheritances and locked doors, Julian. And today, the bill finally comes due."

Before Julian could lunge forward to block the corridor, the sharp, unmistakable wail of police sirens began to wail in the distance, cutting through the morning fog and echoing ominously across the manicured estate lawns.
