Chapter 12 - The Smoke Clears

The single gunshot echoed sharply off the stone walls of the greenhouse, vibrating through the shattered glass and dying out into a heavy, unnatural silence. Eleanor froze mid-motion, her hands dropping away from the assault rifle as it clattered uselessly against the tile floor.
A small, dark red stain bloomed rapidly across the front of her beige wool coat, spreading outward like ink on blotting paper. She blinked twice, her eyes losing their manic intensity, replaced by a sudden, profound look of disbelief.
She swayed on her feet, taking one staggering step backward before collapsing heavily against the armored door of the transport vehicle, sliding down into a crumpled heap among the broken glass.
Rebecca stood frozen in the center of the pavilion, both hands gripping the heavy service pistol, her arms locked straight out in front of her. The recoil had numbed her wrists, and the acrid smell of gunpowder filled her lungs. She stared down at the smoking barrel, her chest heaving as the adrenaline crashed violently through her system.
"Secure the perimeter! Medic, move in!" the tactical captain shouted, breaking the paralysis as a half-dozen armed agents swarmed out from behind the concrete pillars, converging on the downed vehicle.
Two agents hauled Eleanor’s body away from the transport door, checking her pulse before shaking their heads grimly. The matriarch of the syndicate was gone, her reign of terror finally terminated by the very bride her grandson had tried to manipulate.
Julian remained huddled on the floor, rocking back and forth in utter shock, staring blankly at the blood pooling near the back tire of the armored truck. "She's dead," he whispered over and over again. "Grandmother is dead. It's all over."
Agent Emily Vance walked slowly out from behind the pillar, her expression entirely unreadable. She looked down at Julian with a cold, clinical detachment before turning her gaze to Rebecca, who was still holding the service pistol with white-knuckled rigidity.
"Drop the weapon, Rebecca," Emily commanded softly, her voice carrying an authority that brooked no argument.
Rebecca slowly lowered the gun, her fingers loosening as the heavy steel slipped from her grasp and clattered against the shattered glass floor. Her legs buckled slightly under the sudden weight of exhaustion, and she caught herself against the edge of a marble planter.
"I didn't mean to..." Rebecca choked out, tears finally breaking through her stoic exterior as the reality of what she had done crashed down upon her. "I just wanted to stop her."
"You saved several lives, Ms. Reynolds," the tactical captain said, walking over and placing a heavy hand on her shoulder. "That was a clean shot under hostile fire. A textbook neutralization."
Rebecca didn't feel like a hero. She looked at her reflection in the shattered windowpane of the transport vehicle—her hair matted with ash, her white lace dress shredded and stained with blood and soot. The fairy-tale wedding had transformed into a crime scene execution.
"Take him away," Emily instructed the remaining federal officers, nodding toward Julian, who was now being pulled to his feet by two burly agents.
Julian didn't fight back. As the steel cuffs clicked onto his wrists, he turned his head and looked directly at Rebecca, his eyes hollow and filled with a bitter, pathetic loathing.
"You think you won, Rebecca?" Julian rasped as they dragged him toward the waiting patrol cruiser. "You think you're walking out of here with my name and my money? Eleanor had a dead-man's switch set up with the international press. The moment she stopped checking in every six hours..."

Before Julian could finish his sentence, a loud, collective chime echoed across the courtyard as every single federal agent’s tactical communicator and secure phone began vibrating simultaneously.
