Chapter 11 - The Breach at the Glass Pavilion

The roar of a high-displacement V8 engine drowned out the shouting of the federal agents as the black armored transport smashed effortlessly through the ornamental security gates of the estate. The vehicle’s heavy steel-reinforced bumper plowed straight through the boxwood hedges, kicking up a furious cloud of gravel and dust before angling directly toward the glass pavilion of the greenhouse.
"Get down! Take cover!" the tactical captain bellowed, drawing his sidearm and shoving Emily and Rebecca behind a thick concrete pillar.
Glass exploded in a million glittering shards as the armored vehicle’s front tires mounted the stone patio, showering the interior of the greenhouse with razor-sharp debris. The vehicle slammed to a halt just inches from the structural support beams, its engine idling with a guttural, menacing growl.
Julian screamed, crawling frantically backward across the shattered tile as the passenger side door of the transport swung violently open.
A figure stepped down from the running board, draped in a heavy wool coat over a beige outfit, her silver hair blowing wildly in the wind generated by the exhaust. It was Eleanor. Despite the sniper fire and the federal blockade, the matriarch’s eyes burned with a feral, unyielding fury that defied her age.
"You incompetent cowards!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cutting cleanly through the roar of the engine. She leveled a compact assault rifle with terrifying precision, sweeping the barrel across the cluster of federal agents hiding behind the planters.
"Drop your weapon, Eleanor! You're completely surrounded!" the tactical captain shouted from behind his concrete barricade, keeping his own weapon trained on her chest.
Eleanor let out a harsh, barking laugh, her finger resting lightly against the trigger. "Surrounded by bureaucrats who wouldn't know a real empire if it crushed them! This family was built on blood and steel, and it will end the exact same way!"
She turned her gaze directly toward Julian, who was cowering near the floorboards like a whipped dog. Disgust flickered across the old woman's face.
"And as for you, you pathetic excuse for an heir," Eleanor spat, raising the rifle barrel just slightly to point it directly at Julian’s head. "You couldn't even manage a simple wedding without letting federal rats into the pantry."
Julian covered his face with his hands, sobbing uncontrollably as he waited for the shot to ring out.
Rebecca watched the horrific scene unfold from behind the concrete pillar. Her mind raced at hyper-speed. Her designer shoes were ruined, her wedding was a sham, and her life was hanging by a thread. She looked down at the floor near her feet. Lying half-buried in the shattered glass was Detective Vance’s service pistol, which had slipped from his holster when the medics pulled him up the shaft.
Without pausing to calculate the odds, Rebecca dropped to her knees, her hands cutting against the broken glass as she reached out and snatched the heavy black firearm.
Eleanor shifted her weight, preparing to squeeze the trigger on Julian. "Goodbye, boy."
"Eleanor!" Rebecca screamed, lunging out from behind the pillar with the pistol raised and shaking in her grip.
The matriarch whipped her assault rifle around toward the new voice, a triumphant grin spreading across her face as she spotted the bride. "Ah, the ambitious little gold-digger wants to be a martyr too."

Before Eleanor could fire her weapon, a single, deafening gunshot echoed through the shattered glass pavilion, followed by a heavy, metallic thud as the assault rifle slipped from the old woman's fingers.
