Chapter 1 - The Shattered White Doorway

The crisp morning air of the estate garden felt entirely suffocated by the sudden, heavy silence hanging in the white doorway. Julian knelt on the glossy marble floor, his black tuxedo immaculate, contrasting sharply with the raw panic twisting his features. He looked at six-year-old Emily, whose white flower crown was slightly askew. Her face was stained with wet tracks of tears, her small fingers clutching a tiny, roughly folded piece of stationery paper.

"Emily, what the hell happened?" Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low, a sharp edge of controlled fury bleeding through the polished facade he wore for his hundreds of high-society guests waiting just beyond the grand ballroom.

Emily sniffled, her small shoulders trembling inside her stiff tulle dress. She lifted the note toward him with a trembling hand, her lower lip wobbling uncontrollably.

"Rebecca said I have to leave after you marry her," Emily choked out, the words tasting like poison in the quiet corridor.

Julian’s breath hitched. A dark, ugly realization flashed behind his eyes, instantly replacing the benevolent groom persona. He snatched the paper from her grip, his eyes scanning the hurried handwriting.

Footsteps clicked sharply against the marble. Rebecca appeared behind them, her cascading white lace wedding train catching the morning light, her face a mask of absolute bewilderment and sudden distress.

"Julian, what is going on out here? The ceremony is about to start," Rebecca demanded, stepping closer as her eyes darted between the weeping child and the paper clutched in her fiancé's white-knuckled fist.

Julian spun around, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. His eyes burned with an icy, feral hostility that Rebecca had never seen in the three years they had been together.

"Give her to the nanny. She's ruining my damn wedding," Julian snarled, his voice rising in an unfiltered wave of rage, completely shattering the illusion of their fairy-tale romance.

Rebecca gasped, stepping back as if physically struck by the cruelty in his tone. In the shadows behind her, Eleanor, the elderly family matriarch dressed in understated beige, stepped forward. Her cold, calculating eyes surveyed the scene with a chilling lack of surprise, as though she had rehearsed this exact disaster a hundred times before.

Julian looked down at the paper once more. As his fingers loosened in shock, the small note slipped from his grip, fluttering silently down to land on the glossy white floor.

Emily stared down at the fallen paper, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as a shadow fell across the doorway.
