Chapter 6 - The Burner Message

The glowing text message notification on Julian's phone screen burned like a beacon in the dimming light of the half-empty ballroom. The wedding guests had long since fled, leaving behind a chaotic sea of crushed orchids, half-filled champagne flutes, and scattered programs bearing the gold-embossed initials of a marriage that had lasted less than an hour.

Julian stared down at the screen, his thumb trembling slightly as he read the message from David’s private number: You always were too trusting of the math, old friend. The corporate accounts were cleaned out at noon. Meet me at the old shipyard warehouse if you want the keys to what’s left of your company. Followed by an address in the industrial district by the harbor.

The young blonde girl, who introduced herself as Maya during the quiet moments after the police left, watched Julian's expression darken. She adjusted the heavy woolen blanket around the infant—her younger brother, Leo—and stepped closer to Julian, her small frame radiating a fierce, protective energy that belied her tender age.

"You're not going alone, Uncle Julian," Maya stated flatly, leaving no room for argument. "David is a coward, but he’s surrounded himself with fixers and corporate lawyers who play dirty. He’s been draining your assets for over two years, ever since Clara signed those initial papers."

Julian let out a harsh, dry breath, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair until the strands stood on end. He looked at Maya, really seeing her for the first time—not just as a ghost from Clara’s hidden past, but as a survivor who had marched into a high-society wedding with nothing more than a silver pendant and a faded photograph to blow up a multi-million-dollar empire.

"I have to go, Maya," Julian said, his voice laced with a dangerous, quiet resolve. "If David has the corporate master keys, every server farm, every patent, and every cent of venture capital we raised is currently being transferred to offshore shell accounts in the Caymans. I built that company from a garage."

"And he stole it while you were busy picking out floral arrangements for a woman who despised everything you stood for," Maya countered sharply, her blue eyes flashing with inherited stubbornness. "Which is why you need someone watching your six who isn't blinded by corporate loyalty or romantic grief."

Julian looked down at the infant sleeping peacefully against Maya’s chest, completely unaware of the ruthless corporate war being waged around him. A heavy wave of protective instinct washed over Julian, overriding the shock of the past hour. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, pulling out a heavy set of keys and a discreet black keycard.

"Take my car," Julian instructed, handing her the keycard. "Drive straight to my private estate in the hills. The security system is biometric; use my thumbprint scanner by the service gate. My head of security, Marcus, will meet you there with a secure medical team for Leo. Do not trust anyone else—not even my legal team."

Maya caught the keycard out of the air with practiced ease, her gaze locking onto Julian’s with a fierce, unspoken understanding. "And you?"

"I’m going to pay my oldest friend a visit," Julian replied coldly, turning on his heel and striding toward the private service exit with his fists clenched so tight his knuckles turned bone-white.

As Julian pushed open the heavy steel exit door into the cold night air, a sleek black sedan was idling silently at the edge of the empty parking lot, its headlights flickered off, waiting for him.
