Chapter 10 - The Racing Shadow

The Ferrari’s twin-turbo engine screamed through the slick, rain-drenched mountain switchbacks as Julian pushed the vehicle to its absolute mechanical limit. The headlights cut blinding cones through the dense fog rolling off the pine forests flanking the winding estate road. His wrists throbbed where the plastic zip-ties had broken his skin, but the physical pain was entirely overshadowed by the hammering panic in his chest. Maya and little Leo were alone in the hills, and David’s security team was already miles ahead of him on the grid.

Julian slammed his foot down on the accelerator as another sharp hairpin turn loomed ahead, the rear tires breaking traction for a fraction of a second before the all-wheel-drive system bit back into the wet asphalt with a violent jerk.

He reached across the console with one hand, tapping the Bluetooth interface on the dash to dial the encrypted satellite frequency for his estate’s security hub.

"Marcus! Marcus, pick up!" Julian shouted over the roar of the engine and the deafening clatter of rain pounding against the carbon-fiber roof.

Static hissed through the cabin speakers for three agonizing seconds before a heavy, groaning voice responded, broken by bursts of interference.

"Boss... we're compromised," Marcus’s voice rasped, accompanied by the muffled sound of automatic gunfire in the background. "An assault team breached the service gate less than five minutes ago. They bypassed the biometric scanner using a cloned override code. We're holding the panic room in the west wing, but—"

A deafening explosion echoed through the phone line, cutting Marcus off mid-sentence, followed by the terrifying shriek of reinforced steel buckling under pressure.

"Marcus! Marcus, talk to me!" Julian roared, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the steering wheel so hard the leather cracked under his palms.

Silence answered him, save for the crackling hum of an open, dead connection.

Julian threw the car into a hard drift, tires screeching as he careened off the main highway and onto the private gravel access road leading directly up to the wrought-iron gates of his mountainside estate. Through the dense fog, he could see thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the western wing of the sprawling stone mansion, illuminated by the flashing red and blue lights of an emergency response vehicle that had clearly been ambushed before it could reach the property.

As Julian slammed on the brakes, sending a shower of wet gravel flying against the side of the mansion, he threw the driver's side door open and vaulted out into the freezing rain.

The main front doors of the estate hung wide open, splintered hinges dangling uselessly in the wind. Inside, the grand foyer was a war zone—shattered crystal chandeliers littered the marble floor, and expensive antique furniture had been overturned to create makeshift barricades.

Julian drew a breath of cold, smoke-filled air, stepping over a discarded tactical vest lying near the staircase, his eyes scanning the carnage for any sign of Maya or the infant.

Suddenly, a soft, muffled cough echoed from the shadows beneath the grand sweeping staircase, followed by the faint rustle of a white knitted cardigan.
