Chapter 13 - The Federal Intervention

The massive wooden double doors of the estate blew inward with a tremendous crash as a tactical breach ram tore through the deadbolts. Floods of glaring white tactical lights instantly filled the smoke-filled foyer, blinding Julian and pinning the two corporate operatives against the wall with absolute authority.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons and put your hands behind your head where we can see them!" a booming voice commanded through a megaphone, cutting through the heavy rain and roaring engines outside.
Dozens of federal agents in heavy tactical gear swarmed into the grand ballroom, their weapons drawn and focused with lethal precision. Within seconds, David’s corporate operatives were disarmed, zip-tied, and slammed face-first against the marble pillars.
Julian lowered his weapon slowly, letting the heavy submachine gun drop to the floor as two federal agents rushed toward him, checking his pulse and verifying his identity against high-definition scans.
"Agent Vance, Department of Justice," the lead investigator said sharply, flashing a silver badge before looking Julian dead in the eye. "We've been tracking David’s offshore network for eighteen months. You walked right into a classified counter-intelligence trap."
Julian exhaled a long, shuddering breath, the adrenaline finally beginning to fade from his bloodstream, leaving a profound, bone-deep exhaustion in its wake. "If you knew he was funneling defense contracts through my company, why didn't you stop him months ago?"
"Because we needed him to trigger the final transfer of assets to establish a federal RICO case that would stick permanently," Agent Vance replied without a trace of remorse. "Your marriage to Clara was arranged by David’s network to ensure absolute control over your board of directors. She was just a puppet actor in a much larger game."
Julian clenched his jaw, the bitter taste of betrayal burning the back of his throat. He turned toward the hidden alcove beneath the staircase, his heart skipping a beat as he raised his voice.
"Maya!" Julian called out urgently, breaking away from the federal agents and rushing toward the oak paneling.
He pulled the wooden door open. Maya was sitting inside, her face pale, holding baby and flash drive tight against her chest like a shield. When she saw the federal badges and tactical gear filling the room, her eyes widened with a mixture of terror and overwhelming relief.
"It's over, Maya," Julian said softly, extending a hand to help her out of the cramped space. "You're safe now. No more running."
Maya took his hand, stepping out into the bright lights of the foyer just as Agent Vance stepped forward, his eyes fixing on the heavy flash drive clutched in her small fingers.
"Is that the master decryption key?" Agent Vance asked, holding out his hand.
Maya looked up at Julian, hesitation flickering in her blue eyes, before slowly lifting her arm to hand over the flash drive that held the truth to everything.
Suddenly, the federal agent’s radio crackled to life with a frantic transmission from the perimeter guards outside.
