Chapter 5 - The Handcuffed Bride

The sharp metallic clinking of steel handcuffs echoed through the grand ballroom like a death knell for the lavish wedding ceremony. Two uniformed police officers strode purposefully down the white-petered aisle, stepping past fallen floral arrangements and discarded wedding favors as if walking through a crime scene—which, legally speaking, they were.

Julian stood frozen, his phone still clutched in his white-knuckled fist, the dark screen reflecting the harsh overhead chandeliers. He didn't look at the approaching officers; his eyes remained fixed on Clara, watching the last remnants of her untouchable social armor crumble completely.

"Clara Vance," the lead officer said, his voice flat and devoid of professional warmth as he stopped directly in front of the trembling bride. "You are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, and the unlawful abandonment of dependent minors under false pretenses."

Clara didn't scream, nor did she collapse in a theatrical swoon. Instead, her spine stiffened with a cold, desperate defiance. She pulled her hands away from the officer's initial reach, her white silk veil catching on the intricate beadwork of her bodice as she glared past the badge and straight into Julian’s eyes.

"You think this makes you the hero, Julian?" Clara spat, her voice laced with venomous irony. "You think I acted alone? You think that penthouse was bought with your hard-earned tech money?" She let out a sharp, bitter laugh that grated against the tense atmosphere. "Look at the signature on those trust fund documents again, Julian. It’s not mine."

Julian frowned, a cold knot forming deep in his stomach. "What are you talking about?"

"Ask your precious business partner, David," Clara whispered viciously just as the officer firmly grabbed her wrists and wrenched them behind her back, snapping the cold steel cuffs into place with a definitive click. "He financed the entire operation from day one. He wanted your company, and I wanted your name. We were simply business partners sharing a bed."

The officers guided Clara backward down the aisle, her expensive designer heels dragging awkwardly against the polished hardwood floor as she glared back at Julian with unrepentant malice. The wedding guests watched in stunned silence, whispering frantically among themselves as the bride was escorted out of the estate and toward a waiting squad car outside.

Julian stood paralyzed in the center of the devastated venue. The revelation hit him like a physical blow to the chest, dismantling not only his marriage but his entire professional empire in a matter of seconds. David—his oldest friend, his co-founder, the best man who had held the wedding rings in his pocket just twenty minutes prior—was the architect of his ruin.

The young blonde girl stepped forward, gently shifting the sleeping infant in her arms, and placed a tentative hand on Julian’s rigid black tuxedo sleeve.

"Uncle Julian," she said softly, her blue eyes reflecting the shattered chandeliers above. "David isn't at the reception anymore. He left through the private service exit ten minutes before we arrived."

Julian stared down at the empty aisle, his phone buzzing violently in his hand as a new text notification lit up the screen from David's private number, displaying a single address and a taunting message.
