Chapter 3 - The Offshore Trail

The revelation hung in the chapel like a shroud. Daniel stared at the phone screen, the numbers blurring as a crushing realization settled deep within his chest. He hadn’t just been blinded by affection; he had willingly handed the keys of his entire livelihood to a stranger.
"Is this your brother?" Daniel asked, holding the screen up for Elena to see. A photograph of a sharp-eyed man in a tailored grey suit stared back from the display.
Elena’s knees buckled. She caught herself against the edge of the stone baptismal font, her meticulously styled hair coming undone as a single hairpin clattered onto the floor. "He’s... he’s just a business consultant, Daniel. You don't understand how cutthroat the corporate world is."
"Business consultant?" Daniel laughed bitterly, a hollow sound that lacked any humor. "This man isn't a consultant. He's a corporate liquidator with three federal indictments for asset stripping."
Sophie clutched the hem of Daniel’s tuxedo pants. "Daddy, let's go home. I'm scared."
"We're going home, sweetie," Daniel murmured, lifting Sophie effortlessly into his arms. He turned his back on the altar, completely ignoring the stunned murmurs of the wedding party and the weeping bridesmaids in the front row.
"Daniel! You can't just leave me here!" Elena cried out, lunging forward to grab his sleeve. Her lace veil snagged on the corner of the wooden pew, tearing violently as she fell to her knees on the cold floor. "Think of our future! Think of what people will say!"
Daniel stopped, turning his head just enough to look down at the woman on the floor. The empathy in his eyes had been completely replaced by a hardened, unyielding resolve.
"People will say I dodged a bullet, Elena," Daniel said quietly. "And as for our future? Yours is going to involve federal investigators."
He walked down the center aisle, the heavy mahogany doors swinging open to let in the bright afternoon sunlight. Behind him, Elena shrieked in absolute rage, sweeping her flower bouquet across the floor in a flurry of white petals and crushed stems.

As Daniel reached his black luxury sedan parked outside the curb, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a call from his corporate legal team. Instead, it was an alert from his primary bank warning him of an unauthorized login attempt originating from a laptop currently sitting inside Elena’s bridal suite dressing room.
