Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

The scent of white roses and damp earth hung heavily in the air outside the glass doors of St. Jude’s chapel. Inside, the grand cathedral was supposed to be a sanctuary of sacred promises, but the heavy oak doors now framed an atmosphere thick with sudden, suffocating tension. Sophie clutched the wicker flower basket against her white lace dress so tightly her small knuckles turned ghostly pale.
Daniel stared down at his daughter, his chest rising and falling beneath his fitted tuxedo jacket. His styled brown hair was slightly damp from the nervous sweat of the morning, and his dark eyes darted frantically between the weeping child and the altar.
"Sophie, what's wrong? What happened?" Daniel asked, his voice cracking slightly with confusion as he knelt to her eye level.
Before Sophie could answer, Elena stepped forward from the altar. Her white lace wedding dress swept the polished marble floor, and the expensive silk veil draped over her dark updo trembled with a microscopic quiver. She offered a smooth, practiced smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
"Daniel, thank God. She's just overwhelmed by the wedding, darling," Elena murmured, her voice dripping with artificial honey as she placed a delicate hand on Daniel’s shoulder.
Sophie yanked her arm away from her father, pointing a trembling finger straight at the pristine bride. Tears carved hot tracks through the powder on her cheeks.
"She was hiding something in her basket! A second phone!" Sophie screamed, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
Elena gasped, a sharp, ragged sound tearing from her throat as her eyes widened in absolute horror. The color drained completely from her face.
Daniel slowly stood up, turning his gaze from his pale bride back to his shaking daughter. He reached slowly into the wicker basket beneath the scattering of rose petals. His fingers brushed against a cold, buzzing metal device wrapped in black tape. He pulled it out into the glaring light of the chapel.
"Elena," Daniel whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Whose phone is this?"
May you like
Elena took a terrified step backward, her breath hitching in her throat as the screen lit up with a single incoming text message.
