Chapter 11 - Shadows of the Past

The interior of the abandoned warehouse was cavernous, smelling faintly of rusted iron, old dust, and damp river water. Shafts of pale moonlight cut through the grimy high windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the cold air.

Daniel stepped out of the town car, his footsteps echoing sharply against the concrete floor. He kept his hand resting near his pocket, acutely aware of the danger lurking in the dark corners. Arthur stayed inside the vehicle, locking the doors behind him as a safety precaution.

"Julian!" Daniel called out, his voice bouncing off the corrugated metal walls. "I know you're here. Come out and face me instead of hiding behind hired grifters and fake brides!"

From the upper catwalk overlooking the main floor, a slow, rhythmic clapping began. Clap... clap... clap...

A figure stepped out from the shadows of the old office mezzanine, leaning casually against the rusted railing. He wore a dark turtleneck and tailored trousers, his silver-streaked brown hair cropped short. Though five years older and leaner than Daniel remembered, the sharp, predatory smirk was unmistakably his brother's.

"Always the dramatic entrance, little brother," Julian called down, his voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous space. "I must admit, though, you almost ruined the finale with that little stunt in the parking garage. Sarah is going to be doing hard time because you couldn't just let the script run its course."

Daniel walked toward the central staircase leading up to the mezzanine, his eyes locked onto his brother's face. "You faked your death, stole my life, and sent a con artist to manipulate my innocent daughter. You're sick, Julian."

"Sick?" Julian laughed, pushing off the railing and walking slowly down the metal stairs. "I'm pragmatic. You were sitting on a goldmine of quantum technology that you intended to open-source for the public good. Do you have any idea how much money that leaves on the table? I'm simply correcting your lack of ambition."

"The technology isn't yours to take," Daniel said, stopping at the base of the stairs, mere feet away from his estranged brother. "The board will never approve the transfer."

Julian smiled coldly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a pristine, unblemished document. He held it up under the moonlight. It was a signed and notarized corporate merger agreement, complete with what appeared to be Daniel’s own signature.

"The board doesn't need to approve it," Julian whispered softly, stepping down to the final step. "Because according to this legal contract signed six months ago—witnessed by none other than your lovely bride, Elena—you voluntarily signed over absolute operational control of the company to my offshore trust."
