Chapter 8 - The Hidden Safe Deposit Box

Detective Miller slid a small, tarnished brass key across the metal desk. Julian stared down at it, the metallic glint catching the harsh overhead light.

"That was found inside Maya's purse," Miller said. "It belongs to a private safe deposit box at the First National Bank downtown. The bank manager called our precinct an hour ago because Maya had set a strict protocol: if she didn't check in by noon today, the contents of that box were to be handed directly to you."

Julian reached out slowly, his trembling fingers picking up the small key. It felt heavy, cold, and impossibly significant. "Why me? If she hated me enough to disappear for four years and raise my children in secret, why would she leave everything in my hands?"

"Maybe she didn't hate you as much as you think," Miller suggested gently. "Or maybe you were the only person left she trusted to keep them safe from whoever was hunting her."

Lily shifted in her chair, letting out a soft, exhausted sigh. Her eyelids drooped heavily, the adrenaline of the morning finally wearing off. Julian looked down at his daughter, a fierce, protective instinct surging through his veins that he had never known he possessed. The wedding, Clara, the humiliation—it all melted away into absolute insignificance compared to the fragile lives resting in his care.

"I need to go to the bank," Julian said, his voice hardening with resolve.

"Be careful, Julian," Miller warned, sliding a business card across the table. "Whoever set that car on fire knows Maya was looking for you. If those documents or whatever is in that safe deposit box are as valuable as I think they are, you might be a target too."

Julian pocketed the key and the card, hoisting the baby higher against his chest and taking Lily's small, warm hand in his. As they stepped out of the precinct and back into the chaotic city streets, a black town car idling across the avenue slowly pulled away from the curb, its tinted windows hiding whoever was watching them.
