Chapter 12 - The Confession in the Car

The silence inside the speeding police car was suffocating. Julian stared down at the flash drive in his hand, the harsh neon lights of passing storefronts flashing across his pale face.

"No," Julian said softly, his voice deadpan and absolute. "I was an idiot, Miller. I was arrogant, ambitious, and blind. I trusted the senior partners with everything. When the firm collapsed, I thought I was just a victim of bad investments and a shifting market. I had no idea they were using my digital signature to wash millions of dollars through offshore accounts."

Miller kept his eyes on the road, navigating the car through a maze of narrow alleyways to shake any potential tail. "Maya knew, didn't she?"

"She found out the night before we were supposed to get married four years ago," Julian explained, a bitter knot tightening in his throat. "She tried to confront her father’s business partner—the senior managing director, Richard Vance, my own uncle. He threatened her life, threatened me, and told her that if she breathed a word, we would both spend the rest of our lives in a maximum-security prison for crimes we didn't commit."

Lily leaned her head against Julian’s shoulder, her breathing finally growing steady and calm. "Mommy said Uncle Richard was a bad man," she whispered sleepily.

Julian closed his eyes, a searing wave of guilt washing over him. While he had spent years brooding over Maya's supposed betrayal and planning a high-society wedding with Clara, the woman he once loved had been running for her life, protecting their child in the shadows, all while fighting a lonely war against his own corrupt flesh and blood.

"Richard is still running the firm," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, chilling whisper. "And he’s the one who arranged today. He knew Maya was closing in on him, and he probably knew she left those documents in the bank."

Miller reached into his glove compartment and pulled out a secure laptop, handing it back to Julian. "Then we need to plug that flash drive in right now and see what Maya managed to salvage. If there's enough evidence on there to put Richard away, we end this today."

Julian took the laptop, popped open the casing, and inserted Maya’s flash drive into the USB port. The screen flickered to life, displaying a single folder labeled The Truth.
