Chapter 15 - A New Beginning

The pop-up notification on the laptop screen wasn't an error message. It was a live-streamed video feed from an unknown IP address, broadcasting a feed from a dimly lit medical clinic on the outskirts of the city.
Julian stared at the screen in absolute disbelief. There, lying on a hospital cot surrounded by IV drips and medical equipment, was Maya. She was pale, battered, and bruised, but her eyes were open, blinking wearily at the camera lens. Standing beside her in the live feed, holding a secure phone connected to the broadcast, was none other than Detective Miller.
Before Julian could process the surreal visual, his cell phone rang in his pocket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers and answered.
"Hello, Julian," Miller’s voice came through the speaker, calm and entirely devoid of the weary weariness he had projected earlier. "I told you I was a detective. I didn't say which department."
Julian’s breath hitched. "You... you were working with Richard all along?"
"Not with Richard," Miller corrected smoothly. "I was working for the federal task force that has been trying to take Richard down for five years. Maya didn't trust local law enforcement, so she reached out to us directly. We staged her disappearance, faked the car bombing, and kept her hidden in safe custody until we had enough evidence to bring down the entire syndicate."
On the live-streamed screen, Maya weakly smiled, lifting a hand toward the camera as silent tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Daddy?" Lily mumbled, stirring sleepily against his shoulder. "Are we going to see Mommy now?"

Julian looked down at his daughter, then at the sleeping infant in the gold dress, and finally at the laptop screen showing the woman he thought he had lost forever. The ruined wedding at St. Jude's chapel felt like a lifetime ago—a distant, meaningless illusion compared to the raw, beautiful reality of the family that had just been fought for and won.
"Yes, sweetie," Julian whispered, a profound, overwhelming sense of peace washing over his soul as the train surged out of the dark tunnel and into the brilliant morning sun. "We're going home."
