Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

"Daddy!"

The raw, hysterical shriek tore through the fragrant, flower-draped sanctuary of St. Jude's chapel, freezing the string quartet mid-note.

"Stop the wedding! Please, please!"

Little Lily staggered down the center aisle, her blue party dress stained with grass and tears, clutching a heavy infant swaddled in a shimmering gold dress. The eight-year-old’s face was a map of raw panic, her wet brown hair plastered to her trembling cheeks as she pushed past stunned guests in designer tuxedos and silk gowns.

Julian stood at the altar, his black tuxedo suddenly feeling like a suffocating shroud. His jaw locked, and his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists at his sides, deep shock and rising fury warring in his dark eyes.

"What did you just call me?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, vibrating register that cut through the cavernous hall.

A few feet away, Clara pressed a manicured hand over her gasping mouth, her white off-shoulder wedding gown billowing slightly as she staggered back. Her blonde updo, meticulously pinned for months, suddenly felt entirely unraveled by the sheer horror bleeding into her wide, pale eyes. Beside her, Julian’s mother clutched her pearl necklace so tightly the strand snapped, sending tiny white spheres bouncing across the polished marble floor like frozen raindrops.

Lily did not stop. She stood at the base of the altar, tears streaming down her contorted face, pointing a shaky, accusing finger directly at the groom with intense emotional desperation.

"Little finger! Even finger base a picture of yours, start neck!" Lily sobbed, her childish syntax failing her under the crushing weight of the revelation, yet her intent remained brutally clear to everyone present.

Clara dropped her bouquet. The cascading white roses hit the floor with a dull thud, scattering petals across the pristine aisle. Julian turned back toward his bride, his face completely drained of color as Clara whispered two words that made the room spin: "Whose child is that?"
