Chapter 11 - The Escape from the Bank

The metal tray struck the intruder across the shoulder and jaw, throwing his aim off just as a muffled pop echoed through the vault. A bullet slammed into the reinforced concrete wall behind Julian, showering the room with gray dust and stone chips.

Without hesitation, Julian grabbed Lily by the hand, hoisting her up into his arms alongside the baby, and charged past the stumbling gunman. He vaulted over the bank manager, who was whimpering on the floor, and sprinted down the narrow concrete corridor toward the main lobby.

"Stop right there!" the gunman shouted behind them, recovering his balance and giving chase.

Alarms began to wail throughout the bank as the security system reacted to the discharged weapon. Flashing red strobe lights painted the marble lobby in frantic crimson hues as panicked customers and terrified tellers scattered toward the revolving glass doors.

Julian pushed through the chaos, his lungs burning, his arms aching under the combined weight of his two children. He burst out onto the sunlit downtown sidewalk just as a sleek black sedan pulled up sharply to the curb. The rear door flew open, and a familiar face leaned out from the interior.

"Get in! Now!" Detective Miller shouted over the screaming bank alarms.

Julian didn't hesitate. He threw himself and the children into the back seat of the unmarked police car. Miller slammed the door shut, and the vehicle peeled away from the curb just as the armed intruder emerged from the bank lobby, raising his weapon too late as they sped around the corner.

Inside the car, Julian slumped against the leather upholstery, gasping for breath, sweat dripping down his forehead. Lily was crying softly again, clinging to his arm, while the baby in the gold dress miraculously remained asleep through the entire ordeal.

Miller checked his rearview mirror, pressing hard on the accelerator as they wove through midday traffic. "Looks like you found the safe deposit box, Julian. And it looks like somebody didn't want you reading its contents."

Julian pulled the flash drive and the leather journal safely from his tuxedo pocket, clutching them tightly in his hand. "They aren't just after the files, Miller. They think I was part of the financial fraud four years ago. They think I helped launder the money."

Miller’s eyes met Julian’s briefly in the rearview mirror. "Were you?"
