Chapter 9: The Anatomy of Despair

Cornered by irrefutable evidence, Sofia’s rigid posture finally collapsed. The aristocratic mask slipped away, revealing an older, frightened woman whose life of luxury had built a prison of debt and appearances. Her husband sat beside her, staring at the polished wood of the table, offering neither defense nor comfort, a silent co-conspirator in a slow-motion financial disaster. Sofia looked up, her eyes swimming with bitter tears that were entirely genuine this time. She did not scream or throw a tantrum; instead, a harsh, humorless laugh escaped her lips.

"You have no idea what it is like," Sofia whispered, her voice carrying across the hushed room to the ears of every stunned guest. "To spend forty years playing the wealthy matron while the accounts bleed dry beneath you. Mateo’s uncle lost everything in the markets two years ago. Every party, every dress, every gemstone you see on my neck is rented or leveraged to the hilt. When I saw Valeria sitting there draped in generational wealth that she hasn't earned yet, it felt like an insult to my entire existence." The raw, ugly confession hung in the air, stripping away the glamorous illusion of the wedding reception and replacing it with the sordid reality of modern greed. Valeria listened, her anger slowly transforming into a heavy, suffocating sadness for the sheer emptiness of Sofia's life.
