Chapter 2: Shadows in the Ballroom

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom remained firmly locked from the inside, ordered shut by Mateo in a desperate bid to contain the chaos. murmurs rippled through the gathered guests, a mixture of scandalized whispers and nervous shifting. Sofia adjusted her gemstone necklace, her eyes darting between the bride and the trembling maid. Valeria refused to back down, her gaze fixed entirely on Elena. The maid’s canvas bag rested on a velvet-draped chair nearby, looking entirely out of place among the luxury. Mateo lowered his voice, attempting to reason with his furious bride, reminding her of Elena’s decade-long loyalty to the family. But Valeria’s mind was locked in a fortress of betrayal. To her, the necklace represented security, heritage, and the absolute trust she had placed in everyone present.

Elena stepped back until the edge of the service table pressed against her lower spine. Tears welled in the corners of her eyes, spilling over her tightly controlled facade. She spoke softly, explaining that she had only entered the bridal suite to clear away the leftover champagne flutes at Valeria's direct request. Mateo looked back and forth, feeling the suffocating pressure of his new bride's wrath colliding with his deep-seated respect for the domestic staff who had raised him through his own difficult childhood. The guests watched like spectators at a Roman arena, eager for a villain to emerge. Yet, beneath the surface of the glittering hall, invisible currents of resentment and hidden financial desperation stirred among family members who smiled for the cameras while harboring secrets far darker than a missing diamond.
