Chapter 4: A Mother's Intervention

Before the accusation could solidify into a permanent banishment, a sharp tap of a silver spoon against a crystal glass rang out. Beatriz, Mateo’s formidable mother, pushed her way through the cluster of stunned guests. Dressed in midnight velvet that commanded instant authority, she stepped between the weeping maid and the triumphant bride. Beatriz’s gaze was razor-sharp, sweeping over the diamond necklace now clutched in Valeria’s trembling fist. She did not look at Elena with hatred, but rather with a chilling calculation that made everyone in the vicinity pause.

Beatriz turned to her son, her voice cutting through the heavy air with surgical precision. "Mateo, do not be a fool. Look at the clasp." Valeria frowned, clutching the jewelry closer to her chest. Beatriz gently touched her daughter-in-law’s wrist, forcing her to lower the necklace so the lighting could reveal the truth. The metal loop of the clasp was not broken; it had been carefully, deliberately unscrewed. A thief in a rush breaks a clasp; a professional, or someone with intimate access and plenty of time, takes the care to unhook it cleanly. The revelation shifted the entire atmosphere of the room. Sofia stopped sipping her champagne, her posture stiffening. Elena stopped crying for a moment, looking up through tear-blurred lashes at the matriarch who had just altered the trajectory of the night. Beatriz declared that no police would be called yet, because bringing outsiders into this room would expose family matters far more damaging than a missing heirloom. The tension did not dissipate; it merely morphed into a web of suspicion where every single person present suddenly became a suspect.
