Chapter 3: The Canvas Bag

At Valeria’s sharp command, Mateo slowly crossed the polished floor toward the canvas bag. His movements were reluctant, heavy with the dread of what might be found—or worse, what might not be found. Elena closed her eyes, offering a silent prayer to a God who felt very far away. When Mateo unzipped the bag, the rasp of the metal zipper sounded like a gunshot in the dead silence of the hall. He reached inside, his fingers parting through spare cleaning rags, a bottle of window cleaner, and a small, worn leather wallet. He pulled the items out one by one, placing them meticulously on the white tablecloth. The crowd leaned in, their collective breathing shallow.
At the very bottom of the bag, nestled beneath a folded microfiber cloth, lay a velvet pouch. Mateo’s breath caught in his throat. He lifted the pouch, feeling the unmistakable weight and chill of precious stones within. Valeria let out a sharp, triumphant breath, stepping forward to snatch the pouch from her new husband’s hands. She uncinched the golden cord, and the diamond necklace tumbled out, catching the chandelier light and flashing a brilliant, condemning spark. Elena gasped, pressing her hands to her mouth as she shook her head violently, tears finally breaking free. "I didn't put that there," she whispered, the words sounding small and hollow in the vast room. The guests murmured in disapproval, their initial shock shifting instantly into righteous condemnation. Mateo looked at the maid, his eyes losing their warmth, replaced by a devastating, quiet disappointment that cut Elena deeper than any accusation ever could.
