Chapter 8 - The Descent of the Chopper

The deafening roar of the helicopter’s rotor blades whipped the snow into a blinding white vortex, stinging everyone's faces and forcing the wedding guests to shield their eyes with their arms. The orange chopper hovered low over the clearing, its powerful searchlight locking directly onto Julian like a laser sight.

Julian stood frozen by the edge of the altar, the hunting knife still gripped tightly in his right hand. His chest heaved as he looked from the blinding spotlight down to the open grave at his feet, and finally toward the access road where the fallen pine tree blocked any escape. He was trapped from every possible angle.

“Julian! Drop the weapon!” the amplified voice boomed from the sky again, sharper and more urgent this time.

Julian’s jaw tightened into a rigid line. Instead of dropping the knife, his fingers curled tighter around the handle. He slowly turned his head to look at Elena, who was still chained to the wooden pillar of the altar. A cold, desperate madness flickered in his eyes.

“If I can't have you, Elena, nobody will!” Julian screamed over the roar of the engine.

Before Marcus could react, Julian lunged backward toward Elena, his knife raised high to strike.

“No!” Marcus yelled, diving desperately across the snow.

At that exact moment, a loud crack echoed from above. A heavy pine bough, weighed down by ice and buffeted by the helicopter’s fierce downdraft, snapped completely off the tree trunk directly above the altar. It plummeted downward with terrifying speed, striking Julian squarely across the shoulder and knocking him violently sideways into the snow.

The hunting knife flew from his hand, burying itself deep into the frozen dirt beside the rusty metal box of Claire.

Julian groaned in agony, clutching his bruised shoulder as he struggled to sit up. But he was too late.

The helicopter had touched down on the snow-covered access road just beyond the blocked path, kicking up a massive cloud of powder. Heavy boots crunched rapidly through the snow as three armed state troopers sprinted into the clearing, their weapons drawn and aimed squarely at Julian.

“Freeze! State police! Hands behind your back right now!” a trooper barked, closing the distance in seconds.

Two officers slammed Julian face-first into the cold snow, wrenching his arms behind his back with practiced efficiency. The sharp click of steel handcuffs echoed loudly over the wind as they secured him tightly.

“You’re making a mistake!” Julian shrieked as they hauled him roughly to his feet. “I own this land! This is private property!”

“Save it for the judge, pal,” the lead trooper snapped, shoving Julian toward the waiting transport vehicle.

Marcus scrambled across the snow to Elena’s side. He grabbed the heavy steel padlock holding her wrist to the pillar. “Hang on, El, let me find the key.”

“Julian has it! In his pocket!” Elena cried, pointing toward the departing officers.

A sharp voice interrupted them. “Step back, sir. I’ve got bolt cutters.”

A rescue worker rushed forward with heavy industrial tools. With two quick, powerful snaps of the jaws, the steel chain fell away from Elena’s wrist. She immediately fell forward into Marcus’s arms, trembling violently from the cold, the trauma, and the sheer exhaustion of the ordeal.

Grandmother Beatrice rushed over, wrapping her own white fur coat around Elena’s shivering shoulders. They clung to each other, weeping in relief as the snow continued to fall around them.

The lead trooper approached them, holding a heavy plastic evidence bag containing the silver ring and the water-damaged journal. His expression was grim and professional as he looked down at the open grave at their feet.

“Ma'am,” the trooper said softly, looking at Elena. “We’re going to need to seal this entire area. Based on what’s in this box, and what dispatch just pulled from missing persons databases five years ago... we’re going to need forensic excavation teams up here immediately.”

Elena stared down into the dark opening in the snow, her breath catching in her throat as she realized the true nightmare was only just beginning.
