Chapter 6 - The Emergency Flare

The metallic click of the steel padlock echoed sharply across the quiet clearing, chilling everyone to the bone. Julian wrapped the heavy chain around the base of the wooden altar support, binding Elena’s left wrist securely to the pillar with brutal efficiency.

“Julian, stop! Let her go!” Marcus roared, charging forward with the wooden walking stick raised high.

Julian didn't even flinch. He drew a heavy hunting knife from his belt with his free hand, pointing the serrated blade directly at Marcus’s chest without looking back.

“Take one more step, Marcus, and I carve her initials right into your throat,” Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.

Marcus stopped dead, his chest heaving, his face contorted with helpless fury. He lowered the stick by a fraction of an inch, glaring at Julian with pure hatred. “You’re insane. You’ll never get away with this. The police—someone will notice we’re missing by tonight.”

“By tonight, we’ll be miles deep into the northern wilderness on snowmobiles,” Julian replied coldly, turning his attention back to Elena. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small cell phone, tapping the screen before tossing it carelessly into a snowbank. The screen shattered upon impact, completely disabled. “No cell service up here, no passing cars, and no witnesses who can survive the coming blizzard. Look at the horizon.”

Elena forced her gaze away from Julian’s terrifying eyes and looked past the tree line. In the distance, dark, purple-black clouds were boiling over the mountain peaks, swirling with menacing speed. A fierce winter blizzard was rolling in, far earlier than the weather forecast had predicted. The wind began to howl, kicking up blinding clouds of powdery snow that whipped across the clearing.

Grandmother Beatrice, trembling violently and leaning heavily against Marcus for support, pointed a shaky finger at Julian.

“You won't survive the storm either, Julian,” Beatrice rasped, coughing into a gloved hand. “You think you’re so smart, but the cold doesn't care about your little plans. It will bury you right alongside Claire.”

Julian chuckled softly, a dark, unsettling sound. “The cold is my ally, Grandma. It preserves things. Just like it preserved Claire for five years under this very platform.”

Elena’s stomach churned violently. She tugged frantically against the heavy steel chain binding her wrist to the wooden pillar, the cold iron biting into her skin. “You animal... let me go!”

“Shh, love,” Julian whispered, reaching out to stroke her cheek with a sickeningly gentle touch. “We’re getting married today, remember? Just like we planned. The weather is just adding a nice, dramatic touch to the ceremony.”

He turned away from her, walking briskly toward his black SUV parked down the access road. He opened the trunk and began rummaging through a stack of heavy-duty winter gear, his back turned to them for a crucial split second.

“Marcus, listen to me,” Elena hissed in a frantic, urgent whisper, leaning as far as the chain allowed. “In the pocket of my coat... the side pocket. There’s an emergency flare.”

Marcus’s eyes darted down to her coat. Without hesitating, he lunged forward, sliding his hand deep into the beige fur wrap’s pocket. His fingers brushed against a cold, hard aluminum cylinder. He pulled it out just as Julian slammed the trunk door shut with a loud bang.

Julian spun around, immediately spotting Marcus holding the red emergency flare. A furious snarl twisted Julian’s face as he reached back toward his belt for the hunting knife.

“Drop it!” Julian roared, breaking into a full sprint across the snow toward them.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled the plastic cap off the flare and yanked the ignition cord hard. With a deafening hiss, a blinding stream of crimson fire erupted from the end of the cylinder, shooting a brilliant pillar of red light straight up into the darkening storm clouds just as Julian lunged at him with the blade.
