Chapter 1 - The Frantic Digging

The crisp winter air burned the lungs of everyone gathered at the isolated mountain overlook. Snow blanketed the pine trees, and the breath of the wedding guests plumed into the freezing atmosphere. Standing at the altar, Julian adjusted his black wool coat, his face tight with a nervous, guarded tension. Beside him stood Elena, stunning in her white wedding gown and beige fur wrap, her long brown hair cascading down her back. Her eyes were wide, fixed entirely on the base of the wooden altar platform.

There, a large Siberian husky wearing a bright red harness was digging frantically. Paws kicked up dark, frozen dirt mixed with white powder.

Julian stepped forward, waving his hands frantically at the animal.

“Get that dog away!” Julian yelled, his voice cracking with an unnatural panic that cut sharply through the silence of the ceremony.

Elena lowered her hands, staring at him. “Wait, Julian. Stop! What is it doing?”

“It’s a stray, it’s ruining the ceremony, just get it away from the platform!” Julian snapped back, grabbing her elbow to pull her toward the pews.

“Don't touch me,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling. She dropped to her knees in the cold snow, ignoring the dampness soaking through the delicate fabric of her gown. She reached into the freshly clawed dirt and pulled out a small, metallic object. It was a silver ring, crusted with dark soil. She rubbed her thumb across the surface, wiping away the grime.

The silence among the guests was absolute.

Elena held the silver ring closer to her face, her expression shifting from profound confusion to stark, icy distress. Julian hovered right over her shoulder, breathing heavily.

“Who is Claire?” Elena asked softly, not looking up at him.

Before Julian could answer, Grandmother Beatrice stepped forward from the front row of guests. The elderly woman’s face had drained of all color, her short white hair framing a look of sheer, unadulterated panic.

“Where did you find that?” Beatrice demanded, her voice shaking violently. She pointed a trembling finger at the hole in the ground. “Then there's something else buried there.”

Right at that moment, the husky lunged forward again, its powerful jaws clamping onto the edge of a rusty metal box hidden beneath the floorboards. With a sharp heave, the dog dragged the heavy box out into the open snow. The rusted lid was engraved with a single, clear name: CLAIRE.
