Chapter 7 - The Scuffle in the Snow

The blinding red glare of the emergency flare washed over the snowy clearing, casting a hellish, crimson glow across the faces of the terrified wedding guests. Julian tackled Marcus with brutal force, sending both men crashing hard into the powdery snow. The heavy wooden walking stick flew out of Marcus’s grip, burying itself deeply into a snowdrift.
“Marcus!” Elena screamed, straining against the heavy steel chain with every ounce of her strength. The iron links dug mercilessly into her skin, drawing a thin line of warm blood that instantly froze in the biting wind.
Julian straddled Marcus in the snow, his knee pressing heavily into the other man’s chest to pin him down. With his right hand, Julian raised the hunting knife high, the serrated blade glinting ominously under the red flare light.
“You absolute fool,” Julian hissed, his teeth bared in a feral snarl. “You think a flare is going to save you? No one can see this valley from the highway! We are completely alone!”
Marcus gasped for breath, his face turning purple under Julian’s crushing weight. Despite the disadvantage, Marcus managed to bring both hands up, grabbing Julian’s right wrist with a death grip to prevent the blade from descending. Veins bulged in Marcus’s neck as he strained against the murderous pressure.
“Help... her...” Marcus choked out, his vision beginning to blur at the edges.
Grandmother Beatrice let out a piercing cry of terror. She hobbled forward, grabbing a heavy wooden folding chair from the rows of guest seating. With a surprising surge of adrenaline, the elderly woman raised the chair high above her white-haired head and brought it down with a resounding crash directly across Julian’s back.
Julian grunted in pain, the blow breaking his concentration for a split second. The knife slipped slightly from his grip, plunging harmlessly into the snow just inches from Marcus’s ear.
Marcus used the momentary distraction to his full advantage. He drove his knee upward with explosive force, catching Julian squarely in the stomach. Julian doubled over with a sharp gasp of air, losing his balance and tumbling sideways into the snowbank.
Marcus scrambled backward, coughing violently and clutching his bruised ribs. He looked up, his chest heaving, searching frantically for a weapon.
Julian rolled over in the snow, coughing harshly, but his eyes remained locked on Marcus with murderous intent. Slowly, painfully, Julian began to push himself back up to his feet, his fingers closing around the handle of the hunting knife still buried in the snow.
“You’re dead, Marcus,” Julian whispered, wiping blood from his lip as he stood up to his full height. “Both of you.”
Before Julian could charge again, a deafening sound cut through the howling wind. It wasn't thunder. It was the distinct, unmistakable thrum of a heavy engine overhead, vibrating through the ground and shaking the snow from the pine branches above.
Elena stopped struggling against her chain and looked up at the grey sky.
Cutting through the thick, purple storm clouds, a bright orange rescue helicopter appeared, its searchlights slicing through the falling snow and illuminating the clearing in a stark, blinding white beam.
Julian froze. He stared up at the sky, his face draining of all color. His grand plan of isolation, murder, and absolute control was shattering right before his eyes.
The helicopter’s loudspeaker crackled to life, a deep, amplified voice booming down across the mountain peak.
