Chapter 13 - The Rescue Reinforcement

The brilliant orange flare arced high through the freezing night air, illuminating the entire clearing in a harsh, fiery glow. Before Julian could recover from his shock, a massive snowcat utility vehicle burst through the tree line, its heavy steel tracks crushing pine branches as it plowed directly into the path of Julian’s SUV.
The snowcat slammed hard into the side of the black SUV with a deafening screech of rending metal, pushing the heavier vehicle sideways into a deep snowdrift and effectively trapping Julian against the edge of the rocky cliffside.
The door of the snowcat flew open, and three heavily armed state tactical officers poured out into the snow, their assault rifles raised and locked onto Julian.
“Down on the ground! Do it now or we will open fire!” the lead tactical commander bellowed, his voice amplified by a tactical comms unit.
Julian dropped the empty pistol into the snow, raising his hands slowly in the air. His wild, frantic expression morphed into a cold, calculating glare as he realized the tactical advantage had completely evaporated. He made no sudden moves as the tactical officers swarmed him, slamming him violently against the hood of his wrecked SUV and securing heavy steel zip-ties around his wrists.
“You can lock me up all you want,” Julian snarled as they dragged him toward the back of the snowcat. “My lawyers will have me out on bail before the spring thaw. This land is still mine!”
“Not anymore, it isn't,” Detective Vance said, stepping out from behind the rescue truck and lowering his service weapon. He watched coldly as Julian was shoved securely into the back compartment of the heavy utility vehicle. “Eminent domain, tax default, and federal RICO charges for generational homicide. Your family empire is officially seized by the state, Julian.”
Julian’s face finally twisted into genuine terror as the heavy steel doors of the snowcat slammed shut, cutting off his muffled screams.
Silence descended over the snowy clearing once again, save for the howling wind of the approaching blizzard.
Elena stepped down slowly from the back of the rescue truck, her boots sinking softly into the fresh powder. Marcus and Grandmother Beatrice stood closely on either side of her, offering silent, steadfast support.
