Chapter 8 - The Betrayal of the Badge

The heavy brass keys hit the floor with a sharp, metallic clatter that shattered the heavy tension in the cathedral.
David slowly stood up, staring in utter disbelief at the two police officers standing behind Sarah. One of them gave a brief, apologetic nod toward Arthur before resting his hand casually on his holster.
"You didn't really think a local patrol car was going to arrest Arthur's primary security detail, did you, David?" Sarah asked smoothly, her panic completely gone, replaced by the chilling, calculated composure of a seasoned executive. She walked gracefully back down the aisle, stepping over the scattered white flower petals as if nothing had happened.
Elena let out a muffled sob, pressing her hands over her face. "They own everything, David. The police, the courts, the clinic. There is nowhere left to run."
"Shut up, Elena," Arthur commanded sharply, his cane tapping twice against the floor. He turned his cold gaze back to David. "Now, here are your choices, David. You can take your daughter, walk out those doors right now, pretend none of this ever happened, and continue living the comfortable life we provided for you. Or, you can drag this into the public eye, destroy your reputation, and watch every asset you own get frozen in federal litigation before sunset."
David looked down at Mia. The little girl was staring up at him with a mixture of fear and profound confusion, her innocent eyes demanding an answer he didn't have. He thought about the years of lies, the fabricated memories, the stolen life of the woman standing a few feet away, and the terrifying realization that his entire existence was built on a foundation of corporate corruption.
"And what happens to Elena?" David asked, his voice deathly quiet.
"She goes back to where she belongs," Sarah answered coldly, stepping right up to David and looking him dead in the eye. "She was a statistical error, David. A loose end that needed tying up. Just like you're about to become if you don't make the right choice."
David slowly unbuttoned the top button of his dark suit jacket. He took a deep breath, letting the heavy, suffocating air fill his lungs. He didn't look at Arthur, and he didn't look at Sarah. Instead, he reached down, took Elena’s trembling hand in his own, and pulled her behind him, shielding her with his body.
"I spent seven years believing a lie," David said, his voice ringing clear and steady through the empty cathedral. "I'm not spending another minute living one."

With a sudden, violent motion, David grabbed the heavy brass flower urn off the altar and hurled it straight through the massive stained-glass window, shattering the colored glass into a million glittering shards as alarms began to wail across the entire property.
