Chapter 4 - The Scuffle at the Altar

"Look out!" David roared, shoving Mia hard behind his back as Sarah lunged down the aisle like a cornered animal.

Elena didn't have time to dodge. Sarah’s shoulder slammed directly into Elena’s chest, sending both women crashing hard onto the pristine white flower petals that lined the aisle. The heavy floral arrangements wobbled, scattering eucalyptus leaves and white roses everywhere.

"Get off her!" David shouted, rushing forward to pry Sarah’s fingers away from Elena’s collar.

Guests were standing on their pews now, shouting and pulling out phones, turning the solemn cathedral into a chaotic circus. Mia stood frozen near the altar, clutching her bouquet of white flowers, her eyes wide with shock as she watched the two women wrestle on the floor.

Sarah fought like a wildcat, her fingernails clawing at David’s forearms as he tried to pin her wrists. "You can't have him! He's mine! I earned this life!" she shrieked, kicking wildly against the wooden pews.

Elena pinned Sarah’s left arm down with her knee, breathless and bleeding slightly from a scratch on her cheek. "It was never yours to take, Sarah. The truth always comes to light, no matter how deep you bury it in that clinic."

With a final, desperate heave, David managed to wrench the jagged piece of mirror out of Sarah’s grip, tossing it far across the polished floor where it skidded harmlessly under a wooden pew. He slumped back against the nearest pillar, breathing heavily, sweat beading on his forehead.

Sarah lay on the floor among the crushed white petals, her ivory lace dress torn at the shoulder, staring up at the vaulted ceiling with a vacant, defeated expression. The fight had completely drained out of her, leaving only a hollow, echoing silence in the grand cathedral.

Slowly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel creaked open again, letting in the flashing red and blue lights of local police cruisers that had finally arrived in response to an anonymous emergency call.

David wiped his face with the back of his hand, leaving a smear of dirt on his white shirt. He looked across the ruined aisle at Elena, who was slowly pushing herself up from the floor, smoothing down her worn trench coat with trembling hands.

Then, David turned his gaze slowly toward his daughter. Mia was standing completely still, staring at Elena with a look of profound, terrifying realization.

"Dad," Mia whispered, her voice barely audible over the sirens wailing outside. "She... she has my eyes."
