Chapter 12 - The Handwriting in the Chimney

David stared at the heavy envelope resting on top of the metal lockbox, his breath catching in his throat. The handwriting was unmistakably his own—every sharp loop of the letters, every heavy slash of the cross-bars. But he had no memory of ever writing this note, let alone hiding it inside the brick chimney of his own attic.
"David?" Elena whispered, stepping up the ladder into the dusty attic space, her footsteps making the wooden floorboards groan. She stopped beside him, her eyes widening as she saw the metal box. "Whose handwriting is that?"
"It's mine," David replied numbly, his fingers trembling as he reached out and lifted the envelope from the chimney recess. The paper was thick, aged slightly at the edges, bearing the embossed logo of a private medical clinic in upstate New York—the exact facility where Elena had been held captive.
Mia poked her head up through the attic opening, her small brown hair dusted with cobwebs. "Dad, what's in the box?" she asked, her voice echoing in the confined space.
"Stay back, sweetie, it's just some old papers," David said gently, though his heart hammered like a drum against his ribs. He carefully slipped his finger under the wax seal of the envelope and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment.
The note was dated exactly seven years ago—the exact week Mia was born.
If you are reading this, it means Sarah and Arthur have succeeded in wiping Elena’s memory, and I have failed to stop them. They made me sign the institutionalization orders under the threat of taking Mia away from me forever. If I am ever compromised, dig beneath the old oak tree in the backyard. The truth is buried there.
David’s vision blurred as the words swam before his eyes. The room seemed to spin, the dusty rafters closing in around him. He hadn't abandoned Elena willingly. He hadn't remarried because he moved on. He had been blackmailed into silence, his own memories systematically suppressed through the exact same psychological conditioning protocols used on Elena.
"David! What does it say?" Elena urged, her voice cracking with desperation as she grabbed his arm.
Before David could answer, a loud, heavy crash echoed from the first floor of the house below them. The sound of splintering wood and heavy boots marching across the hardwood floor shattered the quiet stillness of the night.
"Federal search warrant! Nobody move!" a harsh voice bellowed from the living room.
David froze. Elena gasped, pulling Mia close against her chest as the sound of boots rapidly ascending the stairs grew louder by the second.

"They're here," David whispered, his mind racing frantically. He looked from the metal lockbox in the chimney to the open attic window leading out onto the slanted shingle roof. "Elena, take Mia. Go out the roof access now!"
