Chapter 2 - The Stranger in the Trench Coat

"Who invited her? Security, get this woman out of here right now!" Sarah shrieked, lunging forward to block the aisle, her face twisted in absolute terror. The pristine ivory lace of her dress caught on a floral arrangement, scattering white petals across the hardwood floor like sudden snow.
David didn't move. He stood paralyzed, his eyes locked on the stranger standing breathless by the heavy oak doors. The woman had damp blonde hair framing a face lined with exhaustion and grief, her chest heaving as she fought for air. She clutched a crumpled manila folder to her chest like a shield.
"Don't you dare touch me, Sarah," the stranger panted, her voice cutting through the rising panic of the congregation. She took a slow, deliberate step down the white aisle, ignoring the gasps from the pews. "You’ve hidden me away for seven years. You’ve let my daughter call this impostor 'Mom' while you locked me in a clinic upstate and drugged my memories away."
"That's a lie! She's unstable!" Sarah cried out, turning desperately toward David, her manicured hands grasping his dark suit jacket. "David, look at me! She's a patient from the psychiatric facility. You know she’s delusional. We talked about this, remember? She poses a danger to Mia."
Mia looked back and forth between Sarah and the weeping stranger, her grip on the small bouquet tightening until the stems bruised. She turned her earnest gaze back to her father. "Dad, she knows about the shoebox. She just mentioned the letters to Elena. How could she know about Elena if she's just crazy?"
David’s breath hitched. The blood roared in his ears, drowning out the murmurs of the stunned wedding guests. He looked at Sarah’s trembling fingers on his lapel—fingers he had trusted for four years—and then at the stranger who possessed eyes the exact same shade of green as Mia's.
"Elena?" David whispered, the name feeling like broken glass on his tongue. He took a heavy step toward the stranger, leaving Sarah standing alone on the altar platform. "Is that... is that really you? They told me you didn't survive the accident."
"They lied, David," Elena sobbed, taking another step forward and holding out the yellowed paper. "And she helped them do it." Elena pointed a shaking finger directly at Sarah. "She was the nurse in charge of my room. The one who erased my life so she could take my place."

Before David could reach out to take the birth certificate, Sarah reached into her handbag with a frantic speed, pulled out a heavy gold-plated compact mirror, and smashed it against the stone pillar, threatening anyone who came closer.
