Chapter 10 - The Roadblock

The black SUV screeched to a halt just inches from David’s front bumper, its heavy tires crunching aggressively over the loose gravel. The tinted driver's side window rolled down slowly, revealing the grim, unsmiling face of one of Arthur’s armed security enforcers.

"End of the road, Mr. Miller," the enforcer called out, resting his arm casually on the steering wheel while his right hand hovered near the glove compartment. "Step away from the vehicle and hand over the keys. You're only making this worse for the little girl."

David’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He glanced in the rearview mirror; Mia was sitting quietly in the back seat, staring out the window with wide, tear-filled eyes, holding the crushed petals of her ruined flower bouquet. Elena stood frozen beside the passenger door, her hands pressed over her mouth as she watched the heavy SUV block their only way out.

"Dad..." Mia’s small voice drifted through the partially open window. "Are we going to jail?"

"No, sweetheart. Never," David whispered fiercely, his jaw tightening into a hard line of absolute resolve.

He didn't step away from the car. Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket, his fingers brushing against his smartphone. Without breaking eye contact with the enforcer in the SUV, David pulled the phone out, unlocked the screen with a swipe, and tapped a single pre-set emergency icon that he hadn't touched in over ten years.

Secure Cloud Protocol: Broadcast All Files to Press.

A small progress bar appeared on the screen, crawling slowly from zero to one hundred percent as gigabytes of encrypted financial records, medical transfer slips, and audio confessions began uploading directly to every major news outlet and federal regulatory agency in the country.

The enforcer in the SUV suddenly noticed the glowing screen in David's hand and realized what was happening. His casual expression vanished, replaced by sudden panic. "Drop the phone! Stop the upload!" he roared, throwing his door open and reaching inside his jacket for a heavy steel baton.

"You're too late," David said coldly, holding the phone up high where the enforcer could see the progress bar hit one hundred percent. Upload Complete.

At that exact moment, the harsh wail of multiple approaching federal sirens pierced the evening air, far louder and deeper than the local police cruisers from earlier. Turning the corner at high speed, three unmarked black vans bearing federal investigative insignia swarmed into the parking lot, completely surrounding Arthur's SUV and cutting off all avenues of escape.

Men in tactical gear poured out of the vans, weapons raised, shouting commands and pinning the enforcer against the hood of his own vehicle within seconds.

Elena slumped against the passenger door of David's car, letting out a long, ragged breath as tears finally streamed freely down her face. "It's... it's really over?" she whispered, looking up at David with profound disbelief.

David opened his mouth to answer, but before a single word could escape, his phone buzzed violently in his hand with an incoming call from an unknown, restricted number. He slowly lifted it to his ear.

"Mr. Miller," a cold, synthesized voice spoke through the speaker. "You just made a very powerful enemy. And you have no idea what secrets are still buried in your own backyard."
