Chapter 9 - The Federal Intervention

The sharp ping of the elevator chime cut through the heavy silence of the control room like a bell tolling for the fallen dynasty. Beatrice Austin stepped out of the brass car with measured, dignified strides, her short silver hair perfectly in place, the heirloom brooch pinned to her black dress gleaming under the fluorescent lights. The two federal marshals flanking her moved with silent efficiency, immediately securing the perimeter and stepping past the stunned figures of Julian and Eleanor.
Eleanor remained slumped against the base of the console, staring blankly at the dead screens of the halted helicopter pad. Julian stood frozen near the door, his hands raised slightly in a gesture of instinctive surrender, his breathing shallow and rapid.
Beatrice paused a few paces away, her sharp eyes scanning the shattered monitor and the heavy fire axe lying on the metal grating. Finally, her gaze settled on Clara, who stood upright beside the master console, holding the heavy sapphire pendant in her hand like a talisman of survival.
“You handled yourself well, Clara,” Beatrice said, her voice carrying a quiet, profound respect that she had never once offered to her own flesh and blood.
“You knew this was coming all along, didn’t you, Beatrice?” Clara asked, her voice carrying a mixture of exhaustion and lingering disbelief.
“You set the trap. You used me as bait to draw them out.”
Beatrice offered a slight, knowing nod, her expression softening just a fraction.
“I didn’t set the trap, Clara. I simply stopped shielding them from the consequences of their own greed,” Beatrice replied, turning her gaze toward Eleanor on the floor.
“For twenty years, Eleanor has systematically looted the philanthropic trusts to fund her private accounts offshore. Marcus and the board auditors helped conceal it. I needed undeniable proof, secured under the legal authority of the true family head, to hand this over to the federal authorities without injunctions tying our hands.”
One of the federal marshals stepped forward, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Eleanor’s wrists as she sat immobilized on the floor. Eleanor didn’t resist; she didn’t even look up as she was pulled to her feet, her dark teal gown dragging across the debris.
As they led Eleanor past her, she raised her head just enough to fix Clara with one final, venomous glare.
“You think you’ve won the crown, girl,” Eleanor hissed through clenched teeth.
“But the Austin name is a curse. It will destroy you just as it destroyed everyone else who ever wore that stone.”
Julian flinched as the second marshal placed cuffs on his wrists as well, leading him out into the elevator without a word of protest.
When the doors closed behind them, only Clara, Beatrice, and the lead marshal remained in the control room. Beatrice walked slowly over to the console, picking up the fallen briefcase filled with illegal bearer bonds and snapping the leather clasps shut.
“She is wrong about the curse, Clara,” Beatrice said softly, turning to face the young woman.
“The stone only destroys those who try to possess it for power. It serves those who protect the vulnerable.”
Beatrice reached out, placing a withered, cold hand over Clara’s fingers, which still clutched the sapphire pendant.
“Now,” Beatrice whispered, her eyes flashing with a sudden, urgent intensity.
