Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Corridor

The sting of Beatrice’s slap lingered on Eleanor’s face long after the matriarch turned her back to comfort Clara on the cold marble floor. Eleanor’s mind raced through decades of meticulous planning, alliances forged, and sacrifices made to ensure the Austin empire would pass directly into her branch of the family. To see it slip away toward a red-haired outsider like Clara felt like a physical tearing of her flesh. She swallowed the bitter taste of defeat, her dark eyes narrowing with a dangerous resolve as she watched Beatrice help the younger woman to her feet.
Julian picked up his phone from the sofa cushion, clearing his throat nervously. The blue silk robe felt suddenly suffocating as he realized the foundation beneath his own comfortable existence was fracturing.
“Grandmother, you can’t possibly be serious about this,” Julian muttered, standing up and smoothing the lapels of his robe.
“Clara doesn’t know the first thing about managing the logistics firm, let alone the offshore trusts.”
Beatrice ignored her grandson entirely, her focus remaining locked on Clara, who was now clutching the sapphire pendant against her collarbone like a shield. Beatrice led Clara toward the private study, leaving Eleanor and Julian standing in the echoing expanse of the living room.
Once the heavy mahogany doors clicked shut behind them, Eleanor turned on Julian with a ferocity that made him step back.
“Fix this,” Eleanor hissed, her voice a low, venomous whisper.
“Your grandmother is losing her mind. If that girl gets her hands on the trust documents tomorrow morning, we are finished.”
Julian rubbed the back of his neck, his casual demeanor cracking under the pressure.
“And what do you expect me to do, Mother? Break into the safe?” he retorted defensively.
“You saw the look in her eyes. She’s rewriting the will tonight.”
Eleanor paced the floor, her dark teal gown rustling like dry leaves. She stopped, a dark realization dawning in her mind. Beatrice had always kept a secondary ledger—a physical record of every corporate infraction and covert transaction tied to the family business. If Clara held the necklace, she held the key to the vault, but Eleanor held the history that could ruin them all.
“She keeps the master keys in the library desk,” Eleanor murmured, half to herself.
“Go down to the east wing. Find the ledger before dawn.”
Julian stared at his mother in disbelief, shaking his head.
“You’re asking me to commit a felony against my own family,” he whispered, horrified.
“We are already ruined if you don't,” Eleanor snapped back, her eyes flashing with a ruthless desperation.

Unbeknownst to them, a soft click echoed from the shadows near the grand staircase. Clara stood halfway up the steps, clutching the heavy blue sapphire tightly in her hand, having heard every single word.
