Chapter 14 - The Breach

The high-pitched whine of the cutting torch screaming against the steel blast door filled the small inner sanctum with a terrifying, rhythmic vibration. Sparks began to shower through the upper seal of the door, glowing like angry orange fireflies in the dim lantern light.

Julian scrambled backward until his spine hit the cold stone wall, his face drained of all color.

“They’re cutting through the hinges,” Julian whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably.

“We’re trapped. There’s no way out of here.”

“There is always a way out for those who know where to look,” Beatrice said, her voice remaining remarkably steady as she walked over to the back corner of the alcove and rapped her ebony cane against a seemingly solid stone block in the wall.

A hollow, echoing thud answered her strike.

Clara immediately stepped forward, leaving the ledger on the mahogany desk and joining the matriarch.

“An emergency egress?” Clara asked, running her fingers along the mortar lines of the ancient stone work.

“Built during the Cold War,” Beatrice confirmed, pressing a concealed iron latch hidden within the carved crest of the stone.

With a low, grinding rumble, a narrow vertical section of the stone wall pivoted inward, revealing a dark, steep stone staircase leading upward into the cool night air outside the estate perimeter.

“Go, Julian,” Beatrice commanded, pointing toward the dark opening.

Julian hesitated, staring back at the glowing sparks raining down from the failing blast door.

“What about you and Mother?” Julian asked, his voice breaking.

“We can’t just leave you here.”

“Your mother made her choice long ago, Julian,” Beatrice replied softly, a profound sorrow softening her stern features.

“And my place is here, protecting the legacy that remains. Go through the tunnel. The National Guard perimeter is waiting at the exit.”

Julian didn't argue further. With a final, desperate look at his grandmother, he scrambled through the narrow stone opening and disappeared up the dark stairwell.

Clara turned to Beatrice, shaking her head.

“I’m not leaving you either, Beatrice.”
