Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

The crystal chandelier overhead cast hard, jagged glints across the marble floor of the Austin estate living room, illuminating a scene of domestic devastation. Eleanor Vance, standing rigidly in her dark teal satin off-shoulder evening gown with lace sleeves, trembling with a fury that made her diamond jewelry catch the light, glared down at the floor. Her dark hair was coiled tightly into an immaculate bun, matching the suffocating perfection she demanded from everyone bearing her surname. Beneath her stood Clara, the young red-haired woman wearing a delicate satin slip dress, curled against the polished stone, sobbing silently with her face buried in her hands.
Eleanor’s chest heaved with suppressed rage. She pointed a manicured finger downward, her voice cutting through the heavy air with venomous precision.
“You were never worthy of this!” Eleanor shouted, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.
“She has no claim to our name!”
Clara flinched, pulling her knees tighter to her chest, her frame shaking violently as fresh tears tracked through the dust on the floor. In the background, seated carelessly upon a sprawling golden sofa, Julian Austin scrolled through his phone in a blue silk robe, completely detached from the wreckage of the family he supposedly belonged to.
Eleanor took a shallow breath, her expression twisting into an even colder disdain as she looked down at the centerpiece of the disaster—the heavy diamond necklace with its massive, glowing blue sapphire pendant lying discarded on the floor just inches from Clara’s bare foot.
“It is only a necklace,” Eleanor spat out dismissively, though her eyes betrayed a desperate, clutching panic that contradicted her words.
Before Clara could lift her tear-streaked face to offer a defense, the heavy double doors of the drawing room swung open with a sharp crack that echoed off the high ceilings. Beatrice Austin, the formidable matriarch with short silver hair and a sharp black dress pinned with an heirloom brooch, strode into the room with swift, unyielding purpose. Her eyes locked onto Eleanor with a terrifying, glacial clarity.
Before Eleanor could process the intrusion, Beatrice’s hand flashed through the air, delivering a resounding, merciless slap across Eleanor’s cheek that left a stark red mark on the pale skin. Julian dropped his phone in shock, the device clattering loudly against the golden frame of the sofa. Beatrice did not pause. She knelt down beside the weeping Clara, her movements surprisingly gentle as her trembling fingers reached out and lifted the sapphire pendant from the cold floor.
Beatrice cradled the heavy gem in her palm, looking down at the broken young woman with fierce tenderness before raising her gaze to meet Eleanor’s stunned, humiliated stare.
“Only the next family head may wear this,” Beatrice whispered softly, her voice carrying an authoritative weight that paralyzed the room.
“And I chose her.”
May you like
Eleanor staggered backward, clutching her stinging cheek, her mouth opening in silent horror as the true scale of Beatrice’s betrayal began to dawn upon her.
