Chapter 6 - The Free Fall

The sharp snap of the elevator cable echoed like a gunshot through the small shaft, sending a violent shudder through the metal cab. Julian shrieked, dropping the steel lockbox as it crashed loudly against the floor, spilling a cascade of old parchment papers and coded flash drives across the gray carpet. Clara stumbled, her grip tightening on the heavy gold signet ring she had just ripped from Julian’s finger. The emergency brakes caught with a metallic screech, holding them suspended in mid-air between floors, the dim emergency lights flickering and dying out entirely.

Total darkness enveloped them, pierced only by the faint glow of the blue sapphire pendant glowing against Clara’s chest.

“Get us out of here! The cable snapped! We’re going to fall!” Julian screamed, his composure completely dissolving into blind panic as he pounded his fists against the reinforced steel doors of the elevator.

Clara remained motionless in the center of the trembling cab, her breath steady despite the sheer terror gripping her chest. She held the signet ring tightly in her palm, feeling the cold metal imprint against her skin. She realized immediately that the failure wasn't an accident; the timing was too precise. Someone on the outside had triggered the maintenance override to trap them here while the estate’s true security purge took place.

“Stop screaming, Julian,” Clara said, her voice cutting through his hysteria with chilling calm.

“Shouting isn't going to fix a compromised brake system. Your mother wanted us locked away, didn’t she?”

Julian stopped pounding, his heavy panting the only sound in the dark shaft.

“Mother… no, she wouldn’t,” Julian stammered, though doubt laced every syllable of his voice.

“She told me the plan was just to intimidate you into handing back the necklace. She didn’t know about the cable override.”

“Your family only understands collateral damage,” Clara replied coldly.

She reached down in the dark, her fingers brushing against the scattered papers on the floor until they found the edge of a heavy leather-bound journal. Without hesitation, she tucked it into the neckline of her dress next to the sapphire pendant. At that exact moment, the emergency speaker above them crackled to life, static hissing before a familiar, measured voice filled the shaft.

“Clara. Julian. Can you hear me?”

It was Beatrice. Her voice sounded steady, devoid of the infirmity Julian had claimed earlier.

“Grandmother!” Julian yelled toward the speaker panel.

“Get us out of here! The elevator is failing!”

“Quiet, boy,” Beatrice’s voice commanded, the authority in it instantly silencing Julian.

“Clara, do you have the ring?”

Clara pressed her mouth close to the speaker grille.

“I have it, Beatrice,” Clara answered clearly.

“Good,” Beatrice replied, a faint note of grim satisfaction in her tone.

“The perimeter doors in the east wing are now locked. Eleanor is trying to flee with the offshore portfolios. Use the manual hatch in the ceiling of that cab. There is a service ladder leading directly to the security control room. Stop her before she reaches the helicopter.”

Before Clara could process the command, a loud mechanical click echoed above them as the ceiling hatch of the elevator popped open, spilling a shaft of pale moonlight down into the dark interior.
