Chapter 9 - The Velvet Trap Closes

The elevator doors slid open with a soft metallic chime, revealing not the expected contingent of federal marshals, but two armed private security guards wearing the crest of the Vance Corporation’s internal audit division—men whom Victoria had secretly retained six months prior under a parallel corporate contract.

Arthur Sterling’s panic evaporated instantly, replaced by a nervous, opportunistic grin as he backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.

“You thought you had checkmate, Julian,” Victoria laughed softly, her dark red velvet dress whispering against the glass table as she smoothly regained her upright posture. “Corporate empires aren't won with audit files and police escorts. They’re won with leverage embedded deep in the boardrooms.”

Julian didn't flinch, his hand instinctively dropping toward his concealed holster, but the two guards already had their weapons leveled squarely at his chest.

“Drop the weapon, Mr. Vance,” the lead guard commanded, his voice devoid of emotion. “We act under the emergency corporate stabilization clause enacted by the majority board shareholders—which, as of midnight, includes Miss Vance.”

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She calculated the angles, the distance to the emergency exit stairwell, and the timing of the harbor feed they had watched only moments before. If the marshals were at Pier 44, they were miles away from the downtown financial district. They were entirely on their own.

“Don't do this,” Elena said, stepping smoothly into Julian’s line of fire to shield him. “You’re tying your loyalty to a sinking ship. Victoria is facing federal embezzlement and child endangerment charges. When the authorities arrive from the harbor, your badges won't protect you from accessory to kidnapping.”

Victoria sneer deepened. “The authorities at the harbor are currently greeting an empty decoy boat, Elena. Did you really think I’d keep Leo at Pier 44 where any amateur detective could track a GPS beacon?”

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, lethal fury. “Where is my son?”

“Safe,” Victoria purred, picking up her designer handbag from the floor. “Provided you sign these asset transfer documents and hand over the audit files you smugly dropped on my table. Once the ink dries, I’ll text you the real coordinates.”

Arthur Sterling hurriedly pushed the paperwork back toward Julian across the glass conference table, his hands trembling slightly. “It’s the only rational choice, Julian. Think of the boy.”

Elena looked sideways at Julian, communicating a silent, desperate message through a micro-expression of absolute trust. Julian caught the cue. His shoulders tensed, his breathing slowing down to a rhythmic, controlled cadence.

“Fine,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a flat, defeated monotone. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a sleek gold fountain pen. “I’ll sign.”

Victoria smiled, a look of absolute, intoxicating triumph washing over her features as she leaned forward over the table to watch the pen hit the paper. “I knew you were a practical man, Julian. Family always comes first.”

Julian uncapped the pen, the metallic click echoing sharply in the silent boardroom. He bent over the first contract page, bringing the tip of the pen down toward the signature line.

Victoria held her breath, her eyes locked on the paper.

Suddenly, Julian didn't sign. Instead, he drove the sharp gold nib of the fountain pen straight through the back of Arthur Sterling’s hand as the attorney reached for the audit files, pinning the man’s palm flat against the mahogany table with a sickening crunch.
