Chapter 13 - The Phantom Twin

The name hung in the damp air of the sub-level archive like a sudden physical blow. Julian lowered his pistol completely, stepping into the blue glow of the mainframe monitors as his mind raced to connect missing pieces of corporate history he thought he knew inside and out.
“Vincent Vance,” Julian muttered, the realization dawning with sickening clarity. “The press reported him dead in a yacht accident off the coast of Monaco ten years ago.”
“It was a staged disappearance,” Maya sobbed, sinking weakly onto a rolling lab stool as she clutched her trembling hands in her lap. “Victoria and Vincent engineered the entire corporate identity fraud. She was the public face of the hostile takeover, but Vincent operated the shadow accounts through a web of offshore holding companies.”
Elena stepped closer, her analytical mind immediately seizing on the operational mechanics of the conspiracy. “That explains why the financial audit didn't add up at the surface level. Victoria was just the velvet snare; Vincent was the blade behind it.”
“Where is he now?” Julian demanded, stepping up to Maya and grabbing her gently by the shoulders to steady her breathing. “If he’s still operating the network, my son and my company are still in immediate danger.”
Maya looked up, terror paralyzing her features as she pointed a trembling finger toward the mainframe monitor glowing on the desk. “He isn't hiding offshore, Mr. Vance. He’s already inside the main residential terminal upstairs.”
Before Julian could process the terrifying implication of her words, the high-security klaxon alarm on the archive wall suddenly began to wail, flashing a blinding crimson strobe light across the damp stone walls.
“Perimeter breach: East wing panic room unlocked via master administrative override,” a synthesized robotic voice echoed through the estate’s intercom system.
Julian cursed violently, spinning on his heel. “The panic room! Leo is still asleep in the nursery right next to the east wing!”
They didn't wait for Maya to explain further. Julian bolted up the spiral metal staircase two steps at a time, Elena right on his heels, their boots pounding against the stone. The brief illusion of safety they had felt only moments ago had been utterly shattered by the revelation of a phantom enemy they never knew existed.
They burst out of the service stairwell into the grand marble hallway. The crystal chandeliers flickered overhead, casting distorted, writhing shadows across the white floor. The door to the private family wing hung wide open, splintered neatly off its heavy brass hinges.
Julian drew his pistol, clearing the threshold with tactical precision, while Elena rushed directly toward the nursery.
The nursery was completely empty. The bedclothes were tossed aside, the window blown open to the autumn wind, and resting squarely in the center of the mahogany desk was a single, pristine white envelope stamped with a blood-red wax seal bearing a family crest no one had seen in a decade.
Elena picked it up, tearing open the heavy parchment as Julian joined her in the ransacked room. She unfolded the note and read the chilling words aloud.
