Chapter 4 - The Price of Silence

“Did you really think it would be that easy, little bird?” hissed a gravelly voice directly into Elena’s ear.
Panic flared in Elena’s chest, but survival instinct immediately overrode terror. She didn't scream. Instead, she stomped her high heel down with full force onto her attacker’s instep, driving the metal heel deep into the man’s foot. A muffled grunt of pain echoed through the stone corridor as the grip loosened just enough.
Elena wrenched herself free, spinning around to face the intruder. It was Marcus, Victoria’s personal security consultant—a man who supposedly retired from corporate intelligence but clearly still moonlighted in corporate espionage. He was wincing, clutching his foot, his jacket straining over a concealed holster.
“You’re playing a very expensive game you can't afford, Marcus,” Elena said, her voice remarkably even despite her racing pulse.
Marcus smirked, shaking off the pain as he advanced slowly, blocking the exit. “Victoria pays very well for discretion. And she pays even better for accidents that happen to curious nannies who don't know their place.”
Inside the vault, Victoria stopped rustling through the files. The sound of voices reached her ears. She stepped out into the corridor, her dark red velvet dress sweeping gracefully across the concrete floor, her expression a mask of cold superiority.
“I told you to handle her quietly, Marcus,” Victoria said, smoothing down her sleeves. “Not chat with her.”
“She’s tougher than she looks, Miss Vance,” Marcus growled, pulling a black zip-tie from his pocket.
“Listen to me, Victoria,” Elena said, standing her ground between them and the open safe. “Julian knows about the server wipe. He’s already reviewing the satellite logs from the main terminal. If you touch me, you’re looking at kidnapping and conspiracy charges that no amount of family money can buy your way out of.”
Victoria’s eyes narrowed into slits. She took two deliberate steps toward Elena, her hand flashing out to deliver a stinging slap across Elena’s cheek. The sharp crack echoed off the stone walls.
“You think Julian cares about a nanny?” Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with repressed fury. “He’s a man drowning in grief and board-room debt. He’s marrying me for my family’s shipping lines. He’ll sign whatever non-disclosure agreement I put in front of him by morning.”
“He loves his son,” Elena whispered, touching her reddening cheek, her eyes blazing with defiance. “And your mistake was forgetting that love always outlasts leverage.”
Victoria laughed, a cold, hollow sound that chilled the damp air. “Love doesn't pay the mortgage, Elena. Marcus, finish it.”

Marcus stepped forward, snapping the zip-tie into a tight loop, but before he could grab Elena’s arms, the heavy carriage house doors swung violently wide open, flooding the vault with blinding headlights and the roar of a high-performance engine.
