Chapter 8 - The Crimson Boardroom

The thirty-ninth floor of Sterling & Vance Associates offered a panoramic view of the sleeping metropolis, but inside the executive boardroom, the atmosphere was as cold as a tomb. The sleek glass conference table reflected the harsh fluorescent panels above, casting an institutional glare over Arthur Sterling, who sat neatly polishing his gold-rimmed spectacles with a silk handkerchief.

The heavy mahogany doors slammed open with a deafening crash. Julian strode into the room like a localized storm, his black overcoat sweeping behind him, his gun holstered but his hands clenched into lethal fists. Elena stepped right beside him, her beige pantsuit dusted with soot from the carriage house, her expression a mask of unwavering resolve.

Sitting at the head of the long table, impeccably groomed with her updo hairstyle intact and her dark red velvet dress catching the ambient city lights, Victoria smiled lazily. She didn't look like a fugitive on the run; she looked like a queen presiding over her coronation.

“You’re right on time, Julian,” Victoria said, sliding a thick stack of legal documents across the glass table toward him. “Sign on the dotted line, initial the asset transfer clauses, and the kid gets handed back to his nanny unharmed.”

Julian didn't look at the papers. He planted his palms flat on the glass table, leaning across it until his face was inches from Victoria’s.

“Where is Leo?” Julian’s voice was a low, vibrating growl that made Arthur Sterling nervously shuffle his legal briefs.

“Safe, warm, and waiting for his new mother to tuck him in—provided you cooperate,” Victoria replied smoothly, her smile never reaching her cold, predatory eyes. “Don't look so tragic, darling. We were going to merge these dynasties eventually anyway. This just accelerates the timeline.”

Arthur Sterling cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his tie. “Mr. Vance, I strongly advise you to sign. My client holds the primary guardianship amendment signed by your late wife’s estate board. Legally speaking, you’re fighting a losing war.”

Elena stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the polished concrete floor, drawing every eye in the room. She reached into her briefcase and dropped a single, slim manila folder directly on top of Victoria’s transfer contracts.

“Your legal framework is built on a foundation of sand, Mr. Sterling,” Elena said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the silent boardroom.

Victoria’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. “What is this nonsense?”

“That is a certified forensic audit of your offshore shell companies, complete with the bank routing numbers you used to embezzle from the Vance family trust over the last three years,” Elena stated calmly, pulling out a second document. “And this is a signed affidavit from your former assistant in the Cayman Islands, detailing how you forged the guardianship amendments.”

Arthur Sterling snatched the folder off the table, his eyes scanning the financial printouts as his face rapidly drained of all color.

“This... this is impossible,” Sterling stammered, looking up at Victoria in sheer panic. “You said the server logs were completely purged!”

Victoria’s composure finally cracked. She stood up so violently her velvet chair toppled backward onto the floor with a loud clatter. Her eyes blazed with pure, unadulterated venom as she glared at Elena.

“You insignificant, overstepping parasite,” Victoria hissed, stepping around the table.

Before Victoria could lunge across the glass, the boardroom’s smart-intercom chimed loudly, broadcasting a live security feed from the harbor docks downstairs. On the high-definition screen, a tactical team of federal marshals could be seen swarming Victoria’s private yacht, pulling a terrified, tearful young boy wrapped in a wool blanket safely onto the pier.

Julian let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for hours, his shoulders dropping just an inch as he watched his son safe in the arms of an agent. He looked back down at Victoria, whose empire of glass and velvet had just shattered into a million irreparable pieces.

“Your meeting with the authorities is about to begin, Victoria,” Julian said coldly, pulling out his handcuffs.

Victoria stared at the screen, her chest heaving as the sirens wailed faintly from the street below. But as the elevator bell chimed and heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor, Victoria didn't look defeated; instead, a sickeningly sweet, terrifying smile crept across her lips as she whispered her final threat.
